Meet Our Summer Intern: Paige Nelson

Hi all! My name is Paige Nelson, and I have the pleasure of being Concerned Women for America’s (CWA) Media and Communications intern this summer!

 

I am so blessed to be in the presence of women who embody Biblical values first and talk policy second. I am from the small town of Arlington, Washington, and am the youngest of three kids. My parents are my whole world, and it is during adventures like these that I am so thankful for Facetime. Moving across the country has been an adjustment, but the women of CWA have made my transition so smooth!

 

I am wrapping up college at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, where I am obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in communications with an emphasis in journalism, as well as a minor in political science. Throughout my college experience, I have been at the forefront of public policy both on and off campus. I am a Young Women for America Ambassador and the current president of the university’s Turning Point USA chapter, where I have had the honor of equipping like-minded students with the necessary tools to win over the other side. Beyond that, I have had the privilege of attending multiple Operation Underground Railroad events that focus on ending human trafficking, as well as networking through conferences like Turning Point USA’s Young Women Leadership Summit and advocating for life in front of my peers.

 

As much as I love getting into debates on the political battlefield, my true love lies elsewhere. Back in Salt Lake, I work for an amazing company that supports older women with disabilities. There I act as a direct support professional, which essentially means I take the ladies out to dinner, teach them how to maintain clean living environments, and assist them in creating healthy behavioral habits and clear boundaries. It has been an absolute joy growing with them and seeing how much progress towards normalcy they can achieve with the right support. That is part of the reason I am so passionately pro-life. Some 67% of babies in the U.S. diagnosed with Downs Syndrome in the womb are aborted. And as heartbreaking as that is, I am so thankful God has called me for such a time as this to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.

 

Looking forward, I am interested in working in public policy in some sort of capacity where I can continue to advocate for and work with both children and adults with disabilities. I strongly feel as though the Lord has given me the heart to love on that specific community, and I hope someday to help create a country where we are loved as we are despite our differences. Whether that be through a nonprofit or by taking legislative action, I know I will be guided on the right path. That is why I am so excited to be here this summer because it is giving me a great visual of what it takes to run a successful organization.

 

Working at CWA feels so surreal, and I am beyond blessed to be able to work towards my career goals in an environment that lifts God’s Word. Although I know these seven weeks are going to fly by, I am excited to reflect on all that I have learned when this chapter closes. I am so thankful for this opportunity to represent Concerned Women for America as one of their interns this summer!

Happy Independence Day!

Independence Day is celebrated across America with BBQs and sparklers in backyards, parades, and fireworks. While these events bring communities together and are a fun way to celebrate, we must never forget to be grateful for the freedom that the Lord has given to America. Praise the Lord that He showered His favor upon America in granting her independence from England over two hundred years ago.

 

Our freedom in America is a gift from the Lord. 

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights.” James 1:17

 

Take the time to say “thank you” to a soldier this Independence Day. They are the ones who selflessly serve and devote themselves to continuing to keep our country free. Make sure they know they are appreciated and valued.

 

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.” – Ronald Reagan

 

Continue to fight for this great nation. Our religious liberties are constantly being threatened, and we must not be silent. Praise the Lord that we still have the ability to voice our opinion, lobby, and seek to change the nation for good. Use the voice and talents God has given you for His glory and the preservation of America.

Liberty Without Religious Freedom is Bondage

For many people today, July 4th is a holiday filled with picnics, friends, and fireworks. But it is also a commemoration of America’s Declaration of Independence. The freedom call was not only against a political and economic system, but it was also a cry for independence from the spiritual tyranny of the Anglican Church.

 

 

In 1775, there were 668 congregational churches in America. Seventy-five percent of all Americans, at that time, belonged to churches of Puritan derivation. The religious makeup was 98.4 percent Protestant, 1.4 percent Roman Catholic, and three-twentieths of one percent Jewish. America was a nation deeply concerned with religious freedom.

 

 

Religious freedom today is far from what the original founders intended. What Americans wanted was a government that did not favor one Christian sect over another. The idea was never to erode Christianity through the separation of church and state. John Jay, after the war, described the homogeneity of America in Federalist 2 (*see below).

 

 

Competition between the various churches, early Americans thought, was healthy; it kept them from becoming complacent, comfortable, and arrogant like the nationally endorsed Anglican Church. In 18th century America, men and women adhered to the Protestant conviction that all men and human institutions were fallible. Americans fought hard for seven years during the Revolutionary War to rid themselves of the shackles of imperial England and her state-controlled church.

 

 

The men who called the people of America to independence were men committed to their country and the freedom of her people. They paid a great price for our independence and religious freedom: five signers were captured by the British army and tortured; 12 men’s homes were destroyed; two had sons who died during the Revolutionary War; one had two sons taken prisoner by the British; nine signers of the Declaration died in the war.

 

 

This July 4th, let us remember those courageous men who helped to establish a free nation. Let us thank God for religious freedom won and exercise that freedom by reaching our generation with the Gospel.

 

Liberty without religious freedom is bondage.

Taos, New Mexico – New Mexico stands ready to welcome women and unborn children. Concerned Women for America (CWA) of New Mexico calls on our citizens, members of the New Mexico Legislature, and the Executive Branch to strongly support a culture of life that protects all. 

 

CWA of New Mexico State Director Nickie McCarty, speaking for Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee, has this to say concerning the Supreme Court decision:

 

“Last year, Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed into law a bill that actively codifies abortion up to birth in New Mexico, forces medical professionals to commit or assist in abortions, and forces New Mexico taxpayers to continue funding abortions on healthy babies and women throughout pregnancy. Now that the Supreme Court has finally overturned Roe in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, it is up to us, the people of New Mexico, to do our part. We must work tirelessly to elect legislators and a governor who support the culture of life.

 

“The Dobbs decision will allow the citizens of New Mexico to debate and discuss this issue with their state legislators. Decisions about abortion going forward will be made by New Mexicans, not by judges. That is ultimately a very good thing.”

Join Us: CWA Celebrates Title IX on June 23

This month as we mark the 50th Anniversary of Title IX, Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee (CWALAC) is celebrating the achievements of female athletes and urging action to Save Women’s Sports. 

 

Join us for the Our Bodies Our Sports Rally in Washington, D.C., on June 23 to stand up for women athletes and the future of Title IX.     

 

CWA has been at the center of the fight to stand for the truth about the sexes and to save women’s sports.  We are standing up for the rights of female athletes, and we will not back down.  CWA is THE ONLY ORGANIZATION TO TAKE OFFICIAL ACTION against universities allowing males to compete in women’s sports TO CORRECT INJUSTICE IN WOMEN’S ATHLETICS.

    

  • CWA has filed three complaints against universities with the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights – to date one has been resolved (in our favor!)
  • We’ve repeatedly challenged the NCAA.  
  • We’ve successfully lobbied members of Congress to make this a priority through a discharge petition in the U.S. House.
  • We’ve lobbied state legislatures, organized young women athletes to demand protection, participated in press conferences, and testified in states across the country, leading to the passage of bills to protect sports for women and girls in 18 states
  • We’ve met with federal government officials to demand that they stop the Biden Administration’s assault on female athletes.

A Proclamation

 

Any American who has ever listened to a bugler sound Taps, the last salute, whether on a green and grassy hillside, a muddy field halfway around the world, or a lonely tarmac stateside or anywhere freedom is cherished and defended, knows exactly why we set aside a special day each year to honor those who have died for our country and to pray for permanent peace.

 

We do so for the sons and daughters of our land who have perished in the cause of liberty, country, and peace, the cause that has called Americans from generation to generation. We do so for the Nation that was home to these heroes and heroines, the Nation that gave them their birthright of freedom. We do so for the sacred trust they have left us, to revere, defend, and preserve all that they have revered, defended, and preserved for us.

 

And we pray for our dead; we ask God to bless them and take them to Himself and reward their patriot’s love. We pray for those who gave their lives in the hope of a future of freedom and peace for their countrymen. We pray for peace and for the devotion and strength of soul to build it and to protect it always. We pray and we resolve to keep holy the memory of those who have died for our country and to make their cause inseparably our own. We pray and we promise, so that one day Taps will sound never again for the young and the brave and the good.

 

In recognition of those brave Americans to whom we pay tribute today, the Congress, by joint resolution approved May 11, 1950 (64 Stat. 158), has requested the President to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer.

 

Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 1987, as a day of prayer for permanent peace, and I designate the hour beginning in each locality at eleven o’clock in the morning of that day as a time to unite in prayer. I urge the press, radio, television, and all other information media to cooperate in this observance.

 

I also direct all appropriate Federal officials and request the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half-staff during this Memorial Day on all buildings, grounds, and naval vessels throughout the United States and in all areas under its jurisdiction and control, and I request the people of the United States to display the flag at half-staff from their homes on this day.

Prayer: Father, we thank You that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” and we were “made in the secret place.” We ask Your forgiveness for our national killing of over 60 million precious babies in the womb. Please bring an end to this egregious stain on our nation by the overturning of Roe v. Wade and restore the integrity of the Court. Bring all states and all people to the realization that life is precious. Turn the hearts of all to honor life so every baby will be welcomed and loved. Amen


 

Primaries are Important – Be Sure to Vote!!

The New Mexico Primary Election is Tuesday, June 7. There are important city, county, and school board races that will be decided. In addition, candidates for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives are on the ballot, as well as a Constitutional Amendment.

 

Many of the winners of these races will be determined in the Primary rather than in the General Election held in November. This will be the case for many state legislative races and the U.S. House race.

 

If you are undecided about how to vote, feel free to call the candidates and question them about issues that are of concern to you. Many cities are scheduling candidate forums where you can hear from the candidates and ask them questions.

Because of redistricting, you might be in a different district than previously, so call your county clerk to find out your correct district. You can also find your voting location online here.

 

If you are not registered to vote or know someone who is not registered, the last day to register to vote is Tuesday, June 7. Early voting has already begun.

 

So be sure to exercise your right and duty to vote!!!

We ask that You guide and direct us to choose the right person to represent us in all these important levels of government. We’re Returning to the Supreme Court-Join Us There!

On December 1, 2021, thousands of pro-life individuals from around the country gathered in front of the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) to rally and pray while the Court heard oral arguments for Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case challenging the constitutionality of a Mississippi state law that places strict limits on abortions after 15 weeks. It was a historic day!

 

If there was ever a moment to return to the Court and stand in support of life and display support for constitutionalist Justices in the face of extreme external pressure, THIS IS IT!

 

Penny Nance, CEO and President of Concerned Women for Americastated, “Chief Justice John Roberts must take charge of his court and issue this decision as soon as possible, sending a clear message that the Court will never be intimidated.”

 

The next possible date when SCOTUS will announce case decisions is Monday, May 16, and we will be rallying in support of life alongside our coalition friends. PLEASE JOIN US! We do not know if the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision will be handed down that day, but we do know this is a pivotal moment. We have fought for this moment for nearly 50 years.

Location: In front of the Supreme Court – Be sure to look for our signs!
Parking: If you are driving, parking at Union Station and walking up to the Court is the easiest unless you want to try to find street parking.

Meet Jennifer Pendleton – Kentucky’s New State Director

I am thrilled to introduce you to Jennifer Pendleton, Concerned Women for America’s new Kentucky State Director. Jennifer is a Kentucky transplant from San Antonio, Texas. She graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Fine Arts and Graphic Design. After a decade navigating the corporate advertising world in Dallas, TX and Lexington, KY, Jennifer and her husband Charles settled on their little patch of heaven in Clark County, Kentucky where they raised two sons, and continue to prepare their daughter for the wide world.

As a homeschooling mom, Jennifer has had many jobs, interests, and involvement. She worked as Communications Director for Southland Christian Church, served as Marketing Co-Chair for St. Agatha Academy, lead mission trips to Haiti, managed a women’s fitness center, and served as pre-school ministry Volunteer Director at her church. Currently, she serves at-risk women at a faith-based first touch ministry, Natalie’s Sisters, in downtown Lexington, KY, and tutors Foundations for Classical Conversations. With a passion for apologetics, she hopes to someday become a Colson Fellow with the Colson Center for Christian Worldview.

A note from Jennifer:

“The last several years have challenged my faith and my core values as an American. The result being that my faith has grown exponentially and my pride in the American experiment has blossomed. The contradiction of emotions evoked by the hysteria of recent cultural events sent me on a prayerful quest to find a way to pair my politics and my faith. In doing so, I found CWA!

“The sound, fundamental principles and common-sense approach of education, advocacy, and prayer is just the guidance I needed to refocus for a mission to inspire people from all faith and political backgrounds with a message that we can be unified under the doctrine of Biblical Truth.

“I believe deeply in the fundamental premise for public education. As CWA State Director, I hope to inspire reform by casting a vision to parents, schools, and legislators of parents’ God-given authority and obligation to participate and guide their children in all areas of their lives, partnering with teachers and school administrators at all times, not giving authority of their children over to the state.

“This disconnect between children and parents, created by our societal dependence on the education system, is leading to a loss of traditional values and an explosive normalization of sexual obscenity, including pornography, prostitution, and sex trafficking. I hope to shed light on these despicable practices and the innocent victims by working with state legislators to reform laws, regulations, and consequences of criminal behavior.

Meet our Intern!

Hello! My name is Myah Abraham, and I am CWA’s Spring intern. I grew up in the northern suburbs of Houston, in the great state of Texas. I will graduate with a double major in Sacred Art and Philosophy in December 2022. Since I have been able to do school completely online, I decided to spend this year interning to gain experience in different fields and figure out what I want to do.

In November 2021, I was sitting at a table with a dear friend of mine, telling her what I would want in an internship: something biblically-based, feminine, focused on grassroots, but political. This friend immediately recommended I look into Concerned Women for America. Upon discovering that they were everything I was looking for and more, including that they were biblically based and that their seven core values aligned perfectly with mine, I immediately applied for an internship for the Spring. I am now nearly through with my internship, and I have loved every moment of it. 

The main takeaway from Concerned Women is that relationships are everything. I intern primarily in the Fields Operations Department and a little bit in the Government Affairs Department. Working in Fields Operations, I get to sit in interviews and phone calls, make connections, and sort through data of different CWA leaders across the United States. I also researched and updated several CWA resources, wrote emails and web posts for Women’s History Month, and much more.  

One great experience was spending the day lobbying at the Virginia state capital with CWA of Virginia. This was such a powerful day of building relationships and learning about local government. This has inspired me to want to be involved more in local politics and maybe even work in local politics one day. I also had the opportunity to travel with Young Women for America to Atlanta to participate in a Save Women’s Sports press conference at the NCAA Division 1 swimming championship.

After this internship concludes, I will finish my schooling and possibly get my Master’s at Liberty University. I plan on sticking around the Washington, D.C. area for a bit to make connections and possibly take another internship. I will also continue running my own pro-life organization, which I have gained many skills from in this internship. 

I love my time at CWA, and I am so thankful God has placed me here! It is a wonderful organization!

Protecting Female Athletes in Iowa

Governor Kim Reynolds Signs Protecting Women’s Sports Bill into Law

 Washington, D.C. – Today, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, signed a bill (HF2416) into law banning transgender girls from participating in girls’ sports at the K-12 and college level. The law will take effect immediately, protecting women and girls’ sports. Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee (CWALAC), who has been working on this legislation, applauds Gov. Reynolds for her courageous action to protect women’s rights to fair play in sporting events.

This law protects girls’ sports by making sure that biological males cannot compete in girls’ sports. Eleven states have passed protections for girls’ sports, while nine other states are debating this issue.

“It is a momentous day in Iowa as HF2416, the Protection of Girls’ Sports bill, is signed into law,” Said Kathryn Kueter, CWA of Iowa Legislative Liason, who attended today’s signing. “Concerned Women for America of Iowa is so pleased with the work of the state legislature and Gov. Reynolds to ensure girls and women in Iowa will have an equal playing field in their sport of choice. Not only is this bill about the protection of athletics, but it stands in truth that men and women are different. Thank you, Iowa, for fighting back against the efforts to erase women and standing with us for all we have accomplished.”

Lia Thomas, a swimmer at the University of Pennsylvania who is a biological male, has drawn national attention to the issue of men competing in women’s sports. Thomas has set records competing against girls and has been cleared to compete in the NCAA women’s tournament. 

“Young women should not be forced to compete against young men,” said Penny Young Nance, CEO and President of CWALAC. “We are thankful to Gov. Reynolds for signing this important piece of legislation that will protect women and girl athletes for years to come.”

Prohibit Medical Abortion via Telemedicine
HB1318 would prohibit medical (RU-486) abortion by telemedicine. With COVID came telemedicine and chemical abortion prescribed over the phone. Self-administered chemical abortions lack medical oversight and care. This dangerous practice not only kills a human life but also puts the life and health of the mother at risk. 

To end her pregnancy, the mother takes mifepristone blocking progesterone, which cuts off food from the baby and ends its life. A day or two later, she takes the second pill, Misoprostol. This drug triggers blood flow so that she passes the baby. Women experience a series of symptoms, like abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and even death. If she suffers complications, there is no guarantee that she has a caregiver and may endure alone the hard and depressing process.

HB1318 will require the medicine to be prescribed by a licensed physician in a licensed abortion facility. Both medications must be taken at the facility instead of at home under the care of the facility’s staff. She must be given all the required informed consent as required by any other abortion and return after two weeks for a follow-up checkup.

HB1318 passed in the House with a vote of 62-8. The bill will be heard in the Senate Health and Human Services Committee Monday, February 28.

Coerced Abortion
HB1113 “An Act to prohibit threats made with the intent to coerce an abortion and to provide a penalty therefor.”  This makes it a Class B felony to threaten an expectant mother to coerce her to have an abortion. HB1113 passed unanimously in the House.

HB1113 was heard in the Senate Health and Human Services Committee but was sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee with a “do pass” recommendation for their consideration Tuesday, March 1.


Sports Wagering – Defeated!
SJR502   Proposing and submitting to the voters at the next general election an amendment to the Constitution of the State of South Dakota, providing for wagering on sporting events via mobile or electronic platform.”

In 2020, the voters approved the legalization of sports wagering in Deadwood. SJR602 would have asked the voters to expand this form of gambling to the entire state.

SJR502 passed in the Senate on February 7 with a vote of 18-17. We are pleased that SJR502 was defeated in the House State Affairs Committee on February 25.

This defeat means that the issue will not automatically appear on the November ballot. But rather, the gambling stakeholders will now have to begin the arduous process of collecting signatures on petitions if they want it on the ballot.

Meet Nickie McCarty – New Mexico’s State Director

I am excited to introduce you to Nickie McCarty, Concerned Women for America’s New Mexico State Director. Nickie is a native New Mexican who grew up in Raton and has lived the last thirty years in Taos. She is married to her loving and supportive husband, Monty, and they have two sons in the military.

Nickie has a degree in accounting and teaching, a master’s in educational leadership, an associate degree in ministry, and is working on her bachelor’s degree in ministry. Nickie recently retired from the Taos Municipal Schools, where she taught math for 16 years and was the Athletic Director for ten years. She is currently the director of the children’s and youth ministries at her church and serves as the leader of the CWA Taos County Prayer/Action Chapter.

Nickie has several goals for CWA of New Mexico, including growing her current base of Prayer/Action Chapters and reversing the devasting New Mexico abortion laws. The state has the least abortion restrictions and is one of seven states that permit abortions at any stage in pregnancy. Nickie says, “It is time to put an end to this great travesty in our state and truly become the ‘Land of Enchantment!’”

Six Month Spiritual Engagement for Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health

The December 1 oral arguments for Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health were just the beginning of our pro-life efforts for this case. If the Court keeps to its historical track record of rendering decisions on “controversial” cases in the last weeks of its term, the Dobbs decision will likely be announced by the end of June.

Until the Supreme Court renders its decision, our posture must be on our knees before the Lord. CWA is encouraging our leaders, members, and friends across the country to set aside the fourth Monday of the next six months, beginning January 24, for focused prayer on the Dobbs case. Using the 30 Days of Prayer for Life prayer booklet and our monthly prayer points listed below, we encourage you to gather together people to pray in person, over the phone, or via Zoom.

Using the 30 Days of Prayer for Life booklet, read silently or aloud prayers 1, 2, 13, 14, and 15.

Strategic Prayer Points:

  • Pray that the March for Life, held on January 21 in Washington, D.C., had a great spiritual impact on the Justices and their law clerks as they continue to study and prepare their opinions for the Dobbs vs Jackson case.
  • Pray for the media, that they will see the importance of the March for Life in light of the Dobbs case and choose to report on the march and the case both fairly and accurately.
  • Pray that the decision of the Dobbs case will end the federal scourge of abortion on our nation.
