Don’t ERAse Women With an Equal Rights Amendment 

 “… legal classifications and distinctions based upon sex are not only discriminatory in themselves,  but also lend governmental support to entrenched customs which ignore women as persons …” Pauli Murray, co-founder of the National Organization of Women

The ERA proposes that “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex” and that “Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.”

The idea of equal rights sounds great, so why is the ERA so wrong for women?

#1 The ERA could erase women’s progress

Adding an equality amendment based on “sex” can have a reverse effect on women’s progress—the legal gains, programs, and policy reforms aimed specifically at benefiting women could be challenged and taken away such as: provisions in the Violence Against Women Act; programs such as Women, Infants, and Children (WIC); special protections in marriage, divorce, alimony and child custody; accommodations for pregnant women in the workforce; spousal social security benefits; female protections on college campuses relating to safety, Title IX, scholarships and admissions.

#2 The ERA could erase legal distinctions based on sex and leave women unprotected

Adding an equality amendment based on “sex” allows federal courts and legislatures new powers to reinterpret every law making a distinction based on gender.

  • Any limits on abortion or denying taxpayer-funds for abortion could be seen as a form of sex discrimination and a violation of this amendment.
  • Women-only safe spaces like sex-segregated bathrooms, locker rooms, or domestic violence shelters could be seen as a form of sex discrimination and violation of this amendment.
  • Women could be forced into military service, instead of this being a woman’s choice.
  • Current legislative trends to neutralize the unique differences of males and females in policy and law (and redefine “sex” as “gender identity”) could be supported by this amendment.

#3 We don’t need the ERA: Women are already equal under U.S. law

Women’s “equality of rights under the law” is already recognized in our Constitution. Amendment 14 states “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor … deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor … the equal protection of the laws.

#4 We don’t need the ERA: Women will continue to use established law to make progress

Through established law such as Amendment 14, Title IX, Equal Opportunity Act of 1963, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Pregnancy Discrimination Act, and Equal Pay Act, women have made huge strides against institutional discrimination against women in education, employment, sports, politics, and many other aspects of society. Where other inequalities may exist, women will continue to use established law.

Encourage and Pray – Now more than ever!

Just this week, my Bible study has been in the book Esther. How appropriate.  Esther 4:14 says, “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”  We are royalty, and our father is the KING! He has positioned us at this time to do incredible things for His kingdom’s purposes, and I cannot think of anything more powerful and more honoring to our Lord than to pray for our elected officials.

We are calling on all past, present, and new Encourage-A-Legislator (EAL) volunteers to gear up for the upcoming 2020 General Assembly session that begins January 8 and volunteer to prayer for a legislator.   You are necessary, and you are needed. Our elected officials need to know that people like you and me – who understand the power of prayer and what a refreshing word does for the soul – will be praying for them.

The goal of the EAL program is to encourage each member of the State House and Senate, by praying for them regularly and sending them a postcard each week throughout the legislative session.  Our goal is to cover all those “in authority” in Virginia – 100 House members and 40 Senate members. The EAL program is never used to lobby and, therefore, is never confrontational. It is simply a great way to lift up those in authority and encourage them in their responsibilities.

The late Reverend Arthur Hopkins said this about prayer, “Our prayer and God’s mercy are like two buckets in a well; while one ascends, the other descends.” So, let’s storm the gates of heaven on behalf of our state leaders. Let’s let our “petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior …” 1 Timothy 2:1-3.

Please tell me YES – that you are willing to pray for eight weeks for a legislator!  We need all hands on deck.

It’s Election Day: Pray and Vote!

Dear Fellow Virginians,

Today is a critical day in Virginia. Voters go the polls to elect their Delegate and Senator and other important down-ballot races. Throughout the day, would you please pray for the following:

Pray for God’s hedge of protection over our nation, even during the election.
If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling,
no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
Psalm 91:9-12

Pray that the election process—personnel and voting equipment—will perform with honesty and integrity.
Do not use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight or quantity. Use honest scales and honest weights … Leviticus 19:35-36

Pray that God’s will be done, our state be blessed with Godly and principled leaders, and His name be glorified.
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Romans 13:1

Tomorrow’s Election Prayer Point

Dear Fellow Virginians,

Tomorrow Virginians will cast a very important vote in our commonwealth’s history. The candidates couldn’t be more different in their positions on crucial moral issues. As the battle escalates over infanticide, liberal indoctrination on Virginia college campuses, transgender policies, the shredding of religious freedoms, and the expansion of government-sanctioned gambling, we need strong officials in our House of Delegates and State Senate to defend us. We need courageous leaders to stand up to the war against our Constitution. We need God’s divine intervention. Our help must come from God.

Virginia Elections: Friday Prayer Point and Pray at Your Polling Place

Dear Fellow Virginians,
When the ancient Israelites entered the Promised Land, their first obstacle was the great walled city of Jericho. As Joshua and the men prepared to conquer the city, God gave them a clear battle strategy. They were to walk around the great city once a day for six days without speaking one word. On the final day, they silently circled the city seven times. What went through the minds of these untrained warriors as they only heard the tramping feet of their fellow countrymen? Did they hear taunts from above as Jericho citizens jeered? They saw the great wall up close. Did they tremble in fear at the overwhelming size of this fortress city? Did they feel outnumbered and unprepared? How many realized that their only hope for victory would be from God? During the silent trek, how many called out to God in prayer? How many asked Him to do the impossible?Today, we need God to do the impossible for us. We too have the opportunity to call out to Him and ask Him to give us a fair election. May He crumble our opponents like He crumbled the walls of Jericho!

Strategy, prayer and Scripture focus for Friday, November 1:
Here’s a simple strategy: On or before the evening of November 4 (preferably before dark), go to your local polling precinct (fill in the information on the form to locate your polling location). Take a few like-minded friends and march around the building or grounds. Pray out loud or silently asking God to make sure no fraud will succeed in the precinct the next day. Pray for only a fair vote to come from the precinct. Below are a few requests. Please feel free to add whatever God lays on your heart. (If you can’t make it to your polling place on or before November 5, please pray at a convenient time as often as you can.)

Prayer while at your polling place:
Dear Heavenly Father, we lift up this polling place. We pray there will be no tampering with machines, ballots, or any confusion causing voters to mis-vote. We pray any attempts at fraud would fail and/or be caught. We ask that all ballots cast would be fair ballots. Help voters not to be deceived but to see the whole truth. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen

When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers. Proverbs 21:15

Virginia Elections: Thursday Prayer Point

Dear Fellow Virginians,
Election Day is getting close.  As we prepare ourselves to vote and elect the members of our Commonwealth legislature, we should never lose track of the number one objective as we pray for our leaders.  Our role as citizens is very simply stated for us in II Timothy 2:24-26,

“The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to each, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil having been held captive by him to do his will.”
As we pray for the election results, let us also pray for the hearts and souls of all of those who govern us, and let us pray that we will put in right standing with our God.

Create in me a clean heart O Lord and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10

Daniel 9 records Daniel’s powerful prayer for the nation of Israel. Pray this prayer substituting the United States for Israel. Confess our national sins of abortion, sexual sins, drugs, alcohol, gambling, apathy, and rebellion against God, etc.

Virginia Elections: Wednesday Prayer Point

Dear Fellow Virginians,

In 1776, the most influential man in the little town of Lexington was a parson by the name of Jonas Clark. On the night Paul Revere made his famous ride, Parson Clark was having dinner with John Hancock and Samuel Adams. These two great patriots asked Clark the question: If war came, would the men of Lexington fight? Rev. Clark replied that he had trained them for that very hour. The next day, the “shot heard ’round the world” was fired only a few yards from his parsonage.

[Our liberty] began in a church—with a parson not afraid to speak out on the great issues of freedom and tyranny. The resounding sermons preached by “the Black Regiment” (named because of the black robes the clergy wore at the time), of which Clark was a part, set the stage for the liberty of America.

The outcome of next week’s election could profoundly impact religious freedom in the Commonwealth, both in and outside our places of worship. Hostility toward pastors and Christians is on the rise, and freedom of conscience and expression are under assault. Because of this, it is critical that church leadership encourages its members to vote on November 5.

Prayer and Scripture focus for Wednesday, October 30:
Churches can make a tremendous difference in government and public policy by helping the members of their congregations be informed, responsible citizens. Pray that pastors will encourage their people to vote knowledgeably and seek the Lord’s wisdom for whom to vote.

Virginia Elections: Tuesday Prayer Point

Dear Fellow Virginians,

Few opportunities come to individuals to make an eternal impact with profound current significance.  Prayer is just such an opportunity.  In the life of America, beginning May 14, 1607, in Jamestown, Virginia, under a sail converted to an awning, Christians have turned to God to guide and strengthen them.  Even more today, most Americans depend on our God to shield and defend us.  This prayer guide is presented as a tool for individuals and groups to use as they ask Him for wisdom and courage to return America to the precepts of God on which it was founded through those whom we elect.  Our thanks to Harvest Prayer Ministries for this great prayer guide, How to Pray for an Election.

Virginians: A Special Election Message from Penny Nance

Dear Fellow Virginians,

I have lived in our beautiful Commonwealth since I came as an 18-year old college student and never left. I am blessed by the people of our state and the many opportunities it has afforded me and my family.  But I write to you today with a heavy heart.  I fear that next week’s election has deep consequences for Virginians and particularly for our children and children’s children.  We are in a battle for the soul of the Commonwealth.  That may seem like a silly overstatement, but I fear it is not.  The Virginia House of Delegates and Senate are in play by one vote.  Our votes and prayers matter.

The question before us today is whether Virginia will become New York and California in our policies? That is why I am asking you to commit to pray daily between now and next Tuesday, November 5, concerning this critical off-year election. Each morning leading up to the election, I am going to send you a prayer intention for the day. I would ask you to read it and send it to other believers.  I ask you pray each day at noon or at another time you set.  I ask that if you are led to fast for a day or even a meal.

I cannot stress how important this election is to the future for our families in Virginia. We must join together in prayer for our state and our nation.  When asked what kind of government the Founders has created Ben Franklin replied, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”  This is how we keep it.

Prayer and Scripture focus for Monday, October 28:
Pray that the plans of the evil one will be thwarted concerning the election and praise the sovereign God of the universe that not one plan of His can be thwarted.

Virginians: Are You Registered to Vote?

Tuesday, October 15, is the last day to register to vote for the off-year elections in Virginia.

Reminder: It is election season in Virginia, where voters will go to the polls in November to elect state legislative races only. Virginia’s off-year elections are critically important, and that is why Concerned Women for America (CWA) of Virginia says it’s “game on” to get conservative women and men registered to vote and to the polls this November! CWA of Virginia is partnering with conservative organizations across the state to get out the vote through voter registration and voter turnout efforts.

Important Virginia Voting Registration 2019 Deadlines

  • Tuesday, October 15: Deadline to register to vote, or update an existing registration.
  • Tuesday, October 29: Deadline to request an absentee ballot to be mailed to you. Your request must be received by your Registrar by 5:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, November 2: Deadline to vote in-person absentee.
  • September 21 – November.  Voting absentee – in person.
  • November 5 – Election day.

CWA of Virginia Recommends These Two Events

There is a disturbing trend happening in many of the Northern Virginia school districts. Most recently, the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) school board has been making policy changes that expose our children and our neighbors’ children to sexually explicit materials and inappropriate and dangerous situations.

“Gender Identity” Policy Alert
In May 2015, the FCPS school board added “gender identity” to its nondiscrimination policy (Policy 1450) which opened the door for students to use restrooms and locker rooms of the sex for which they identify rather than their biological sex. FCPS allows principals and administrators to make decisions about accommodating transgender students’ bathroom and locker room usage on a case-by-case basis. Students are given no advance notice if a student of a different biological sex will be using the same facilities that they use.

Sexually Explicit Curriculum Alert
Parents should also be aware of troubling content in Family Life Education (FLE), Fairfax County’s sex ed curriculum. In ninth grade, students are taught that “gender assigned at birth” may be different than one’s biological sex. One eighth grade lesson mentions anal sex four times. A fifth grade lesson refers to needle sharing and sexually transmitted diseases. Parents can opt their students out of FLE. However, they are often unaware of the content, trusting that their school system is teaching age-appropriate content to their children.

Even if parents do opt their students out of Family Life Education, their students may still be exposed to sexually graphic material. Assigned high school English literature sometimes includes passages containing bestiality, incest, pedophilia, and gang rape. Book titles may be listed in a syllabus, but teachers are not required to inform parents when students will be reading books with this inappropriate content.

Action Items:

  • Contact your school to find out how to opt your student(s) out of FLB.
  • Ask your school the process for checking out copies of student-assigned textbooks so you can review the content.
  • Consider attending one or both of the CWA of Virginia recommended events listed below. These events will help educate parents and communities about what is happening in our public schools, specifically in Fairfax County.
  • Vote your values and vote in the November 5 school board elections.

A Call to Prayer

I Timothy 2:1-2 instructs us to pray for our leaders. CWA of Virginia’s Encourage-A-Legislator (EAL) program offers our members and friends the vehicle to do this in an easy and meaningful way. It ensures consistent prayer for each legislator, and it encourages and builds bridges with the conservative legislators as well as those who do not normally agree with us.

As prayers are offered on behalf of the legislators, and they receive your postcards, hearts are changed and encouraged.

Whether a legislator is a believer, non-believer, conservative, liberal, Democrat, Republican, independent or other, they are in desperate need of prayer. This next legislative session, CWA of Virginia plans to deliver those prayers.

The Program

The goal of the EAL program is to encourage each member of the State House and Senate, as well as state-wide office holders, by praying for them on a  regular basis and sending them a  postcard every week throughout the legislative session, beginning the second week of January (six-week session in odd years and eight-week session in even years.) Our goal is to cover all those “in authority” in Virginia, 100 House members, 40 Senate members, and three statewide officeholders.

The EAL program is never used to lobby and, therefore, is never confrontational. It is simply a great way to lift up those in authority and encourage them in their responsibilities. Many good relationships have started through the EAL program.

We provide the name and address of the assigned legislator(s) and the postcards, and you commit to praying for your assigned legislator(s) every Monday morning the Virginia General Assembly is in session and then mail an EAL postcard on that day.

Her Vote Will Harm the Women of Virginia.

Richmond, VA – On behalf our members who reside in Rep. Abigail Spanberger’s (D-District 7) congressional district, Concerned Women for America of Virginia wants Rep. Spanberger to know that she has been misled and fooled by H.R. 5, the deceptively-named “Equality Act.” The Equality Act makes an unverifiable and unscientific attempt to address discrimination by elevating protections for select groups on the basis of a new definition of sex. H.R. 5 redefines the term sex to include “sexual orientation and gender identity” in civil rights law, elevating “gender identity” over the protected class of sex as male and female.

As absurd as it sounds, this bill Rep. Spanberger supports strips women from any protection from men who would identify as women in bathrooms, locker rooms, women’s shelters, sports competition, and more.

The Equality Act would give any person the right to claim “gender identity” as the opposite sex at any time. This legislation is a direct threat against every woman in America and in our great state of Virginia. Its effects are nothing less than extreme, far-reaching, and uncontainable.

Most importantly, Americans do not need the Equality Act to ensure equal rights. All people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, already receive equal protection of the laws under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Equality Act will be used, as other gender identity policies have, to impede upon the rights, privacy, and safety of women and girls.

Supporters like Rep. Spanberger have no way of defending the threats the Equality Act have against women even though basic common sense makes it obvious to most people. It’s a shame Rep. Spanberger blindly jumped on the bandwagon.

Concerned Women for America of Virginia rejects this misguided legislation with far-reaching implications that would be imposed on the American people, especially women.

Arlington Public Schools Crafting Harmful Policies for Children

In direct opposition to many parents, Arlington Public Schools (APS) is crafting transgender and gender nonconforming policies for children as young as kindergarten under the guise of nondiscrimination. These policies are being quietly pushed in Arlington, Virginia, and if successful, could be coming to your schools very soon.

Background:
You may have read this controversial news story earlier this year about the reading of the book I am Jazz to a kindergarten class at Ashlawn Elementary school in Arlington. The book, about a transgender child, was read to five-year-old kindergartners by a transgender woman who had been invited into the classroom through a relationship the county has formed with a transactivist rights organization.

After hearing about the book reading, parents began to investigate what was going on in the school and why they were not given the option of opting their child out of such a reading. What they learned was that the APS school board was working on a policy proposal they said was in regards to transgendered students’ safety and civil rights. However, should this policy be adopted, under the guise of nondiscrimination, the integration of transgender curricula and ideology will be forced upon every young child at school without parental consent.

In response to the proposed new policy, a group of politically and religiously diverse Arlington county parents came together to form the Arlington Parents Coalition to expose what is happening in the school system. Read news coverage here and here.

Action Items:
Whether you have children currently in school or not, you are a tax paying citizen and therefore have the right to voice your opinion.

  1. Please complete the APS survey on their proposed policy changes. This is an opportunity to voice your opposition to the proposed changes. The deadline to complete the survey is this coming Tuesday, June 11.
  2. Visit the Arlington Parents Coalition There you will find specific action items to fight back against the enormous overreach by the APS.
  3. If you do not live in the APS district, stay alert to similar proposed policies in your communities, and be sure to let me know of any concerns.
  4. Please pass this e-alert onto those you know. Encourage them to both pray and act.

As women and mothers, we love our children and cannot imagine the anxiety when a child is hurting about their identity. I can only feel love and compassion for children who feel as if they identify as the other sex. These children must be loved and supported by other children, teachers, and adults in their lives. God says in Matthew 25:40, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Our charge, directly from the Lord, is to care for those who are hurting.

However, we can love and support gender-dysphoric children (who make up less than 1% of the population) without advocating for the ideological transactivist indoctrination of the other 99%.

Please pray for the parents and children of Arlington. May the Lord give them extraordinary discernment. Please pray for Arlington School Board members by name.

Sheriff Candidate Forum a Great Success

The Concerned Women for America of Virginia (CWA) Forest Prayer/Action Chapter sponsored a Sheriff Candidate Forum last month. Since CWA is non-partisan, this informational and educational forum was held so that our members will be well educated when they go to the polls.

A special thank you goes out to our host church, Forest Alliance Church, located on Jefferson Road in Forest. The fellowship hall was packed out with CWA members, guests, and four of the five candidates running for sheriff.

The candidates desiring to be our next Bedford County Sheriff who were present were: Tim Hayden (I), Mike Miller (R), Kent Robey (R), and David Wells (R). James Kirkland (I) was unavailable to attend.   Each candidate vying for the position comes with years of police experience.   They all gave an overview of what they see their role is as sheriff of Bedford County and a list of desired action points. The candidates all agreed that school safety is a concern and additional School Resource Officers are needed, however, they said they would show restraint on adding to the tax burden of the residents of Bedford County.

On the questions of marijuana decriminalization and gambling/casinos, all were in agreement that marijuana is a gateway drug and all forms of gambling, including the lottery, is detrimental to families. They all oppose the decriminalization of marijuana and all forms of gambling.

Concerning the question on “hate crimes,” all the candidates expressed that a crime is a crime and if a law is on the books, enforce it. They all echoed that if you have been a victim of any crime, hate or otherwise, report it.

The majority spoke very firmly that they supported the Second Amendment and expressed that it is not the gun that kills but the person pulling the trigger.

Vote on Rules Change Failed! ERA is Officially Dead in Virginia!

Thank you for praying about and taking action on the multiple urgent e-alerts we have sent you concerning the ERA in Virginia for over a month now.

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen” (Ephesians 3:20-21).

Your continued prayers and action worked! The ERA was stopped in Virginia for this year! On a party line vote, earlier today, the rule change vote was narrowly defeated in the House of Delegates, killing the ERA for this legislative session. The last-ditch efforts of ERA allies were thwarted. Thanks be to God!

The House of Delegates 51 Republicans voted to defeat any changes to the rules but the 49 Democrats each voted for the rule change. It was that close!

Join us in praising God for this victory in Virginia.

In your thank-you notes/emails, please remember to let them know that you are a member of Concerned Women for America of Virginia, we’re praying for them, and that we will continue to fight against ERA alongside them next session.
