When all hope in human skill disappears,
And the learned proclaim with their sneers:
“Miracles don’t exist, that’s clear!”
We, the “foolish ones,” know You hear.
So, we stoutly ask Your intervention,
By the breathtaking power of Your resurrection,
Against this horrid government contravention
That, like Pilate, seeks to kill by abstention.
Let Your love be ever-present for Alfie and his family.
May his life and story be, by grace, a mighty homily
Of the omnipotence, wisdom, sovereignty, and majesty
Of He Who created Alfie, and Charlie, and all humanity.
Sustain little Alfie by Your mighty right hand;
May he live and breathe as long as You’ve planned,
Ignoring the pompous sound of human demands
With its willful ignorance of what was beforehand.
O LORD, resurrection and life, You —
There is no one else we can look to;
In Whom dwells all that is peaceful and true;
Who by grace, through faith, can make all things new.
Above all, thy will be done.
May all who hear of Alfie, one by one,
Get to know Your voice and come
To the One we know has already won.
