October 11 Action Alert – For Such a Time as This

Dear CWA of Washington Member,

Autumn greetings to you!  After a short hiatus from my Concerned Women for America (CWA) role in August, I was off to attend the CWA Leadership Training Conference in September. The conference’s theme was “Our history lies before us … For such a time as this.” This quote is a reference to Queen Esther’s bold appearance before her husband, the king, to plead for her people’s protection and future in the midst of a pagan culture.  The conference educated and encouraged CWA leaders from around the nation and allowed plenty of time to pray with one another. We prayed for our nation’s future and for a new infusion of Biblical values and Constitutional principles through the prayer, education, and action of our fellow CWA leaders.

We enjoyed hearing from several speakers such as Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) at our Capitol Hill Briefing, and Kellyanne Conway, Counselor to the President, and others in the administration at the White House briefing.  I was blessed to lead the group in prayer on religious freedom, as others led in prayer for our other six core issues during our wonderful time of worship on the last day.

PRAYER

 We have several courageous Christian brothers and sisters in our state who have taken a bold stand for the free exercise of their religious liberty rights.  Coach Joe Kennedy lost his case before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in August, but he has re-filed his case for a hearing before the entire panel of judges in the same court to retain his individual right to pray privately in a public place.  Click here to view Fox News’ August 24 coverage.  Since becoming a God-free zone, our public schools have become increasingly hostile to Christian religious expression.  Pray that Joe Kennedy will win his case as one small step toward reinforcing our First Amendment rights.

Florist Barronelle Stutzman continues to stand for her religious liberty and ability to live by her sincerely held beliefs in her privately owned business. The question is whether the government has the right to compel citizens to participate in events contrary to their religious principles. According to her lawyer Kristen Waggoner, the next step is to ask the United States Supreme Court to reverse the Washington court’s ruling.  Please pray that SCOTUS accepts this case and that our First Amendment rights are confirmed.

In Colorado, Baker Jack Phillips operates his business according to his Christian convictions and thus, was unwilling to use his creative talents to help celebrate a non-traditional marriage.  His case, Masterpiece Cakeshop vs. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, is headed to the U. S. Supreme Court and CWA has filed an amicus brief supporting Phillips’ freedom of speech and the free exercise clause of the First Amendment.  Pray for a successful outcome for Mr. Phillips and for our religious freedom.

Continue to pray boldly for our country’s future as “One Nation Under God”.

EDUCATION

 CWA of Washington Educational MeetingOn Saturday, November 4, CWA will host a members’ meeting in Everett with the theme “Restore Us, O God” from Psalm 80:3.  Two well-known speakers will address CWA’s core issues: Family, Religious Liberty, National Sovereignty, and Education.  For more details and to view and print a flyer, go to our state website. Join us for lunch and fellowship at noon!  Registration deadline is Friday, October 27.  If you are a current member of CWA in the Everett area, you should have received a postcard recently.

As of the start of this school year, Washington schools are now teaching new learning standards for health and physical education starting in kindergarten (follow the thread through Health Education Standards, Core Idea:  Sexual Health, #5 Self Identity).  If districts fully adopt the standards, politically correct concepts of gender identity and gender expression will be taught to children without parental approval.  I have previously written about this threat to every family’s right to guide their children’s moral upbringing.  This overstep by the state undermines that right.  Please be in prayer about this issue, and then educate yourself by accessing the website above and talking with other parents, as well as your children’s teachers.  Attend school board meetings and express your educated concerns about this issue.

ACTION

 Young Women for America:  Are your daughters or granddaughters concerned about the anti-Christian influences and environment in their high schools or universities?  Check out the website for CWA’s mission to grow Young Women for America.  Currently, there are YWA chapters at Seattle University and Seattle Pacific University.  40 Days for Life: The sanctity of life is one of CWA’s seven core issues, so we encourage you to pray and take action by participating in this peaceful and prayerful semiannual event. This fall’s campaign runs from September 27 – November 5. There are seven Washington state locations: Everett, Mount Vernon, Olympia, Tacoma, Tri-Cities, Vancouver, and Wenatchee. Click here to find where the closest gathering is to you. This is the largest fall 40 Days for Life campaign ever and is taking place in more than 715 cities around the world!  By the grace of God, 40 Days for Life has achieved proven results such as 13,305 babies spared from abortion, 154 abortion worker conversions, and 85 closed abortion centers. Join in this national campaign to save lives! If you are unable to attend a prayer gathering, please use this time for extra prayer to defend our God-given right to life.

Prayer Vigil for Life, Bellevue is based on 40 Days for Life and aims to encourage peaceful prayer on the sidewalk outside the Bellevue Planned Parenthood. Go to their website for information about their group, instructions, pro-life talking points, printable and pre-printed resources, and parking information.

It’s time to put feet to your prayers! July 12 Action Alert – Pray Without Ceasing!

July greetings to you!  I hope you had a great time celebrating our nation’s 241st birthday!  In this country, we have so much for which to be thankful.  From yummy barbeques to bright fireworks, there are so many ways that we celebrate this remarkable holiday.  The founding values and principles of this nation are clearly stated in our Declaration of Independence and Constitution. These significant principles are found in the Declaration of Independence as follows: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Our shared values must be restored and supported in our nation’s laws and culture.  That is the goal of Concerned Women for America.  Our seven core issues (Family, Sanctity of Human Life, Education, Sexual Exploitation, Religious Liberty, National Sovereignty, and Support for Israel) each address a specific area of concern for American citizens who wish to restore the founding principles to this country and reverse the moral decline in our nation. PRAYER
In the state of Washington, we are constantly barraged by well-organized opposition. In response, prayer is CWA of Washington’s first priority, followed by education and action. I ask you to prayerfully consider becoming a leader by organizing other concerned citizens to lift up our nation’s needs to our God Who hears our prayers.  Please consider starting a Prayer/Action Chapter in your community, either with friends, neighbors, or church members.  The average chapter has five participants, and it only takes about two hours per month to host a chapter meeting. CWA will provide contact information for local members.  While God is unquestionably in charge of our world, we are encouraged to be prayerful, to be  faithful, and to be involved in the works needing to be done here on earth. MORE PRAYER!
Remember to pray for the Stormans in Olympia, Coach Kennedy in Bremerton, Barronelle Stutzman in Richland, and other Washington State citizens who have stood firmly for religious liberty. Each of these cases concerns our right to freedom of conscience and how we are allowed to go about personal or business related activities.
Finally, please pray for our families as we are continually challenged to live out our faith.  The current push for transgenderism and other ungodly behaviors is difficult to comprehend.  While several respected sources, such as the American College of Pediatricians and Johns Hopkins Hospital, have consistently warned about promoting transgenderism, the political correctness  on this issue continues in clear rebellion to God’s laws and principles. It insists on forcing the rest of society to conform to a non-Biblical worldview made up of alternative opinions.  As mentioned in previous alerts, Washington State’s Department of Education supports teaching all children in the public schools that they can choose their own sex, or gender, despite their inherent biological sexual identity.  Parents need to be aware of what is being taught to their children and parental rights need to be respected. Children should not  be exposed to ideas that are contrary to family values.  To be proactive in protecting your own children, stay updated on what is happening in the schools and stay in touch with your child’s teacher.

EDUCATION
The U. S. Supreme Court has recently made several  encouraging decisions regarding religious liberty. We hope to see the courts continue to make decisions in favor of Concerned Women for America’s core issues and to reverse the moral decline in this country. May 18 Action Alert – Stand Fast and Pray Without Ceasing!

Dear CWA of Washington Member,

Do you feel as if you’re in the midst of a social/moral tornado?  There is so much swirling around us right now that it’s sometimes hard to keep our focus on God and His Holy Word.  That is precisely when we need to stop and pray, bringing us back to focus and remembering Ephesians 6:10-20: “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil … Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

May we continue as an organization, and individuals, to stand in these evil days; knowing that our strength to stand comes from God alone.

CWA remains the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization.  I think Abigail Adams would be a member.  I own a t-shirt with one of my favorite quotes from her on it:  “If we are to have Heroes, Statesmen, & Philosophers we should have learned women.”  She wrote that in a letter to her husband. John. on August 14, 1776, while he was off fighting for the freedom of this nation and she was tending to all the business at their farm in Massachusetts, a role she continued to play for the many years that John traveled.  She might have been called a housewife in those days, but from the letters I’ve read from her to John and to Thomas Jefferson, she also was indeed a learned woman and one of the founders of our nation, supporting,encouraging, and emboldening many others from the home front.

PRAISE & PRAYER

40 DAYS FOR LIFE reports that this spring’s campaign saw 341 cities and 30 countries participate, making it their largest spring campaign ever.  Thirteen thousand unborn babies will live because of the wonderful, prayerful witness of community volunteers who stand quietly outside abortion facilities to demonstrate their love for babies and their parents.  Praise God!  If you were one of those volunteers, CWA thanks you.

WASHINGTON STATE LEGISLATURE – SPECIAL SESSION: The first Special Session officially ends May 23.   Pray for a “breakthrough” in the budget negotiations for basic educationContinue to pray for our state legislators and staff for strength, stamina, wisdom and discernment. 

PRAY FOR RIGHTEOUS RULERS IN WASHINGTON STATE!  Pray for Godly individuals to accept the call now to run for office in the upcoming years’ campaigns.

PRESIDENT TRUMP:  Continue to pray for wisdom and understanding for our President. Pray he will rise above the rhetoric surrounding him, follow the Lord wholeheartedly (even as King David with his mistakes), and step into the role God has purposed for him.

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM / WASHINGTON STATE SUPREME COURT – STUTZMAN CASE: The Washington State Supreme Court ruled against florist Barronelle Stutzman on Thursday, February 16, determining that the government can force Barronelle Stutzman – and by extension, other Washingtonians, to create artistic expression and participate in events with which they personally disagree.  Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys represented Barronelle Stutzman, whom the state attorney general and the American Civil Liberties Union sued for acting consistent with her faith. This case is being appealed to the United States Supreme Court.  This decision at the Washington Supreme Court clearly exhibits the need for religious liberty protections in this state and country. It will probably be September before we know if the Court will accept the case.  Pray that they will.

THOSE ENDURING RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION: Please continue in prayer for those in Washington state going through religious persecution – Mrs. Stutzman, the Stormans (case concluded), Coach Kennedy (no current details available), plus the Kleins in Oregon who lost their family bakery.  All of those individuals and their families have carried a heavy load and appreciated our prayers for justice to be served in their battles for their First Amendment rights to live out their sincerely held religious beliefs in the public arena, including their businesses and occupations.  Please keep them in prayer for peace and perseverance. The Kleins simply chose not to bake a cake for a homosexual wedding and for that choice they lost their bakery.  Coach Kennedy was fired for simply kneeling to pray after football games. The Stormans chose not to participate in any form of abortion, lost their case in Washington, then appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court which declined to accept their case. Stutzman’s case is ongoing. While the case details vary, it’s obvious that the outcome of all the religious liberty cases around the nation will affect each of us as we stand fast in defense of our religious liberty and Biblical principles.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”  (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

GOOD FIRST STEP ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM BY PRESIDENT TRUMP: Visit CWA’s national website for an insightful article by CWA’s Legal Counsel, Mario Diaz, Esq.

SIGN THE “JUST WANT PRIVACY” PETITION: No law should ever force girls or women to share their bathrooms, locker rooms, or gym showers with grown males.  “Just Want Privacy” needs to collect 330,000 signatures by July 1 to qualify for the ballot.   Initiative 1552 will require schools to maintain separate facilities for boys and girls and allow businesses to manage their private areas in the way they feel is best.  Excerpt from Initiative 1552, “The people of Washington state find they have a reasonable expectation of privacy and safety for themselves, their children, their families, and others in places separated for female use only or male use only such as restrooms, bathrooms, locker rooms, showers, and changing areas, and that promoting and protecting their privacy and safety is a serious matter of legitimate public concern. The people further find that schools, in particular, are places where a child’s privacy and safety should be promoted and protected and that students should never be forced into environments where they may be viewed in various stages of undress by members of the opposite sex or gender, or where they may view members of the opposite sex or gender in various stages of undress. The people also find that forcing female and male students to share private facilities such as restrooms, bathrooms, locker rooms, showers, and changing areas with each other will create significant risks of embarrassment, shame, emotional harm, or psychological injury to students . . . .” Copies of Initiative 1552 are available for pick up around the state (https://justwantprivacy.org/petition-request-form).  Please pick up petitions and gather as many signatures as possible.  Again, we have until July 1.

SUPPORT RELIGIOUS RIGHTS: HB 1602, relating to protecting the first amendment rights of school sports coaches and others; etc., sits in the House Judiciary Committee.  It would be wonderful to see the bill proceed to floor votes, but at the very least it is a good start and will appear again next year. Please contact the members of the House Judiciary Committee.  Ask them to vote YES on HB 1602. Email and/or call them.  Leave a message for them after hours if that works best for you.  Be sure to let them know that you are a member of Concerned Women for America of Washington.

Who could have imagined that our nation and its culture would be in such an obviously downward moral spiral in 2017?  CWA was founded to counter the moral decline in our culture in 1979, which was surely a challenging time, unfortunately leading to the increasingly rapid decay of the social, moral and political climate of today.  God knew all of this was coming, of course, and His Word constantly encourages us to stand fast therefore:  “Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.  Let all that you do be done with love.”  (1 Corinthians 16:13-14)

PRAYER

 ENCOURAGE-A-LEGISLATOR CAMPAIGN:  If you are a prayer warrior in our Encourage-A-Legislator campaign, I thank you and encourage you to keep praying and sending in those postcards through the end of this year’s scheduled session on April 23.  Our legislators need all the prayers and encouragement we can give them!

PRAY FOR THOSE BEING PERSECUTED FOR THEIR FAITH:  Please stay in prayer for these courageous Washington state Christians as they fight for our First Amendment rights to religious liberty and the free exercise thereof:  The Storman family in Olympia, Barronelle Stutzman in Richland, and Coach Joe Kennedy in Bremerton. Unfortunately, around the nation there are continuing attacks on Biblical principles and our Christian faith, whether through the media or government bureaucrats who have forgotten that they work for “We the People”.  We must stay involved through prayer and in support of our fellow believers.

EDUCATION

 INITIATIVE 1552 Safe Spaces for Women and Children:  This state initiative repeals the “open-bathroom rule” made by the Washington State Human Rights Commission in December of 2015.  I-1552 restores the rights of business owners to maintain gender-specific facilities, and requires public schools to maintain gender-specific facilities.  The State Attorney General determines the “concise description” and, as expected, chose to put the words “gender-identity discrimination” in that description.  However, this initiative would protect the 99.6% of the population that is not confused about their sexual identity and who have the right to expect privacy and safety in traditionally gender-specific spaces including bathrooms, showers, spas and locker rooms.

In order for Washingtonians to have the right to vote on I-1552, the Secretary of State’s office requires 330,000 petition signatures by July 7.  Please join in these efforts.  Go to the Just Want Privacy website to be part of the petition drive and encourage others to do the same.  All hands on deck!

ACTION

 40 DAYS FOR LIFE CAMPAIGN: This year’s 40 Days for Life campaign concludes this Sunday, April 9. CWA of Washington wholeheartedly supports the ministry of 40 Days for Life. “40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion.” Take Action:  Grab a pro-life sign and find the nearest campaign location to participate in this weekend.  This is a wonderful opportunity to support human life from conception through natural death.  For more information on 40 Days for Life and where the closest location is to you, click here.

PRAYER IS ACTION: CWA’s first priority is prayer.  With that in mind, I exhort you to remember Paul’s exhortation in 1 Timothy 2:1-3 to pray and intercede and give thanks for the governing authorities, “that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.”  Consider gathering others at your church or in your neighborhood to pray with you.  James 5:16: “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man (or woman!) avails much.”

CWA of Washington March 3 Action Alert – Get Involved!

Dear CWA of Washington Member,

Get involved. Stay involved.  If not you, then who?  If not now, then when?  As branches on the vine, we are to bear fruit:  “I am the vine, you are the branches.  He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”  What are you willing and able to do to produce fruit for our LORD?  Pray?  Educate others?  Take action by assembling a group of friends to pray?  Whatever your gift, you can use it to produce fruit!

We would love for you to organize a CWA Prayer/Action Chapter, join the state Steering Committee, and/or put your faith and education into action by contacting your own state and federal legislators to express your opinion on issues of importance to our Biblical worldview.  Choose your issue, choose your role, but please get involved!

PRAYER

PRAY FOR THOSE BEING PERSECUTED FOR THEIR FAITH: I was disappointed recently by a speaker who claimed that Americans are not suffering any discrimination for their faith.  I wondered how he could make such a statement when Christian bakers, florists, pharmacists, and even coaches are being told right here in Washington state (as well as around this nation) that they cannot exercise their religious freedom in their public lives, particularly in their businesses or jobs.  For years, this state’s Attorney General and his office have been persecuting the Stormans in Olympia for their choice not to stock or dispense abortifacients and Barronelle Stutzman in Richmond for her polite declining to participate in a homosexual wedding by using her florist skills.  Coach Joe Kennedy was fired by the Bremerton School District for simply kneeling quietly after each football game to honor God.  Kennedy lost his job, but the Stormans and Stutzman stand to lose not only their businesses, but their entire life’s savings, in addition to the unnecessary stress caused by this government intrusion into their First Amendment right to religious liberty and the free exercise thereof.

Please stay in prayer for these courageous Christians as they fight for our religious liberty and the free exercise thereof.  There are so many more examples of this attack on Biblical principles and our Christian faith (e.g. in the military and in the public schools).  We must stay involved through prayer and in support of our fellow believers.

EDUCATION and ACTION

GREAT BILLS THAT NEED YOUR SUPPORT: In my last action alert, I listed five legislative bills that CWA of Washington supported:  HB 1003, 1011, 1178, 1243, and 1649.  Those five bills promoted our core issues of sanctity of human life, family, and religious liberty.  For the committees these bills were in, February 17 was the last day to have bills read in order to pass them out of committee and to the respective floor for a vote in the house of origin. Unfortunately, none of the five bills was acted upon and therefore will likely see no further consideration this legislative session. We thank those who contacted the committees and expressed their support of these bills.  Our hope is that they will be presented again in our 2018 legislative session.

SUPPORT JUDGE GORSUCH: At the national level CWA has announced their support of President Trump’s nomination for the U. S. Supreme Court, Judge Neil Gorsuch.  Click here for more information on this nominee and why he is a great choice.

CWA of Washington February 3 Action Alert – Not Laboring in Vain

Dear Concerned Women for America of Washington Member,

In this day and age, we as Christians can feel very isolated and intimidated by the daily news, wondering if our outreach to the world for the Gospel of Christ is in vain.  Let me encourage you with Paul’s advice to the Philippians in chapter 2, verses 14-16:

“Do all things without murmuring or disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the Day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.”

While the mainstream media may ignore last week’s March for Life in Washington, D.C., this link should encourage you that we labor not in vain in our support of the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death: CWA’s Penny Nance Talks March for Life on FOX.

PRAYER

Washington state citizens in the midst of court battles regarding religious liberty and the free exercise thereof in our private and public lives, including our businesses:  Stormans in Olympia, Barronelle Stutzman in Richland, Coach Joe Kennedy in Bremerton.

Pro-family state organizations engaged in the battle to protect and preserve the family as God created it, including one man-one woman marriage, respect for the unborn, parental rights, and more.

EDUCATION and ACTION

Concerned Women for America asks our members to have faith with action, always beginning with prayer.  We choose to educate and encourage you to consider legislative bills that relate to our Seven Core Issues:  Defense of Family, Sanctity of Human Life, Education, Sexual Exploitation, Religious Liberty, National Sovereignty, and Support for Israel.

Below you will find the bills we would like you to call or email your state legislators about supporting.  At the beginning of the legislative session, the bills are being heard by committees, then they are either stopped in committee or they move on to the appropriate house (House of Representatives or Senate) for a floor vote.  We will update you on these bills on a weekly basis, but we also encourage you to go to the Legislative Homepage regularly to find out the status of these bills. While it’s important to contact each on the committee, the legislator who represents you is most likely to respond to your feedback.  You may contact members of the specified committee or other committees from the legislative homepage by clicking on “Legislative Committees” on the right side of the page.  You may either contact your legislators directly through that website or you can leave a message on the Legislative Hotline at 1-800-562-6000.

Family:

HB 1011 – Relating to allowing the use of gender-segregated facilities; and amending RCW 49.60.030

CWA supports this bill.

 Each individual has a right to the expectation of privacy, lack of fear or intimidation or embarrassment while in a bathroom, shower room, locker room, or other facility which traditionally have been gender-segregated according to biological and chromosomal identification.  This bill does not change the rights of children or disabled persons to be taken into the bathroom of their parent’s or caretaker’s gender, but it does allow public and private entities to limit use of facilities segregated by gender with some exceptions.

Sanctity of Life:

HB 1003 Relating to requiring parental notification for abortion, adding a new section to chapter 9.02 RCW; prescribing penalties; and declaring an emergency. 

CWA supports this bill.

Parental rights with regard to their minor children must be respected and upheld in order for our family structure to survive and flourish.  When children must have our permission to take any medications at school, etc., it is logical to respect the same level of responsibility and accountability for all medical decisions.  Our daughters deserve our support and need involved parents!  There are exceptions made for emergencies or incest.

HB 1649 – Relating to declaring that the right to life, as recognized in the Declaration of Independence and guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States and Washington state, is vested in each human being beginning at the moment at which an individual comes into being; and adding a new chapter to Title 1 RCW.

CWA supports this bill. 

The right to life is an unalienable right granted to each human being by Almighty God; no other human being has a right to destroy such life without just cause.  The unborn human being deserves particular protection because of its helpless state and needs a voice to verbalize its rights. With modern technology, we are able to view 3-D ultrasound pictures of the preborn, so there is no excuse not to recognize them as fully human beings with the same right to life as the rest of us.  The acronym “SLED” has been used to explain this: Size, location, environment, and development should not define a human life.

HB 1243 – Relating to prohibiting the sale, donation, or use of aborted fetal body parts; amending RCW 70.58.150, 68.64.150, 68.04.020, and 68.50.110; adding new sections to chapter 9.02 RCW; and declaring an emergency.

CWA supports this bill.

It’s simply an abomination to sell human baby parts.  Organ donation from adults of their own free will is a totally separate issue, since first these babies must die at the hand of an abortionist, then their parts are sold or used as if they are mechanical parts not related to the tragic loss of an individual’s life. At no point after conception is a human baby anything other than a human being, no matter the “SLED.”

Religious Liberty:

HB – 1178 Relating to protecting the rights of religious freedom and conscience of individuals in their beliefs and practices from government discrimination; and adding a new chapter to Title 49 RCW.

CWA supports this bill.

This bill restates the First Amendment, thus ensuring the protection of the rights of religious liberty and exercise and conscience from government discrimination, particularly regarding the definition of marriage:  New Section. Sec. 2. The legislature finds the following:  (1) Leading legal scholars concur that conflicts between same-sex marriage and religious liberty are real and should be addressed through legislation; (4) Protecting religious freedom from government intrusion is a government interest of the highest order …

This bill would protect citizens like florist Barronelle Stutzman who was sued by the Attorney General for her refusal to participate in a same-sex “marriage”.  She stands to lose not only her business, but her entire life-savings if her religious liberty is not upheld.  Keep praying.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

 The mindset used to be: “Is it okay for Christians to be involved in public policy?”  The question now should be: “Is it okay for Christians not to be involved in public policy?” If we as believers aren’t involved, who is?  The answer to that question is increasingly troublesome, isn’t it?  Don’t be isolated or intimidated, but rather put on your spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:11-17) and stand fast!  Join or organize a local CWA Prayer/Action Chapter or sign up for our “Encourage-A-Legislator” Campaign.  Pray, educate and take action, however you choose to do that, but please stand and shine for God’s Word of life, hope and joy through Christ Jesus, God’s Son and our precious Savior.

May God enable us to be “holding fast the word of life” and shine “as lights in the world,” witnesses to God’s Holy Word for all of mankind.

CWA of Washington January 16 Action Alert – Stand

Dear CWA of Washington Member,

New Year’s greetings from CWA of Washington!  We trust you had a Christmas full of joy and wonder at God’s gift of His Son and our Savior, Christ Jesus, and that 2017 is off to a good start for you.  CWA will continue to watch, stand fast in the faith, and encourage you to do the same with courage and strength from our Almighty God.

PRAYER

ENCOURAGE-A-LEGISLATOR!  There is still time for you to sign up to encourage a state legislator during the 2017 Washington State Legislature’s session.  We need to pray for the governing authorities, as Paul exhorted us in 1 Timothy 2:1-3.  President Ronald Reagan said once that “if we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a Nation gone under.” Let’s help those authorities to remember the importance of the Bible to this nation’s founding, history and future.   Please click here for more details, then, consider participating in this campaign.

WASHINGTON CITIZENS bravely and strongly standing fast in the faith who need our prayer support:  The Storman Family in Olympia, Barronelle Stutzman in Richland and Coach Joe Kennedy in Bremerton.  Although the details are specific to each case, the overall principle is the same:  Denial of First Amendment rights to the practice of freedom of religion in one’s private and public life.  Please continue to pray that these and other citizens across our nation will continue to boldly stand fast and eventually win their legal cases.

EDUCATION

STATE LEGISLATIVE SESSION HAS BEGUN: The 2017 Washington State Legislature convened on Monday, January 9.  CWA of Washington keeps an eye on bills that relate to our Seven Core Issues:  Defense of Family, Sanctity of Life, Education, Sexual Exploitation, Religious Liberty, National Sovereignty, and Support for Israel.

STAND IN THE GAP WITH US: We will inform you of any bills related to those Seven Core Issues, with the hope that you will interact with your district legislators, politely and boldly expressing your thoughts so that they can truly represent you.  One of the Scriptures that motivates me to apply Biblical principles to the culture is Ezekiel 22:30 when God looked for a man to stand in the gap before Him on behalf of the land, but found no one.  Let’s pray this is the year that Bible-based citizens are not absent, but stand in the gap.

CUTTING EDGE INFORMATION: I hope you check the national CWA website on a regular basis.  It is loaded with educational articles on cutting edge issues of importance to Bible-based citizens.

INSPIRATIONAL/MOTIVATIONAL SCRIPTURE: How better to begin this New Year than to remember God’s Word?  May this be a year of standing fast in the faith with boldness and strength.

  • “Because we have such hope, we speak with great boldness.” (2 Corinthians 16:13)
  • “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” (Galatians 6:9)
  • “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”  (Ephesians 6:10-11)

ACTION

39th ANNUAL WASHINGTON STATE MARCH FOR LIFE:  Monday, January 23, 2017, at noon on the Capitol steps in Olympia.  Take a carload down with you and join this wonderful event to support innocent human life from conception to natural death.  Consider standing with CWA of Washington.  Look for our banner and join us.  Stand for the sanctity of human life by marching with thousands of others; you will be glad you did. Bring the whole family!  We strongly urge you to consider making an appointment with your legislators to express your concerns on this issue and to let them know you were at the rally. CALLING ALL LEADERS:  CWA of Washington is looking for concerned citizens to stand fast in the faith and to be brave and strong.  We are looking for leaders to join our Steering Committee as issues experts.  If you have a passion for one of our core issues, please pray about activating that passion through CWA.  Beyond our witness for the Lord Jesus Christ, our most important work is to apply our Biblical principles to our lives, starting with our own lives and families, then to the culture that surrounds us.  Since public policy controls our lives, our input as Christians is so vital, so “that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (I Tim 2:3).  Of course, that statement depends on our “supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks for all men, for kings and all who are in authority”  (I Tim 2:1-2).  Please click here for a Leadership Application to indicate your willingness to step out and lead.

PRAYER/ACTION CHAPTER LEADERS:  Prayer is CWA’s primary incentive, believing Paul’s exhortation in the verses quoted above.  I exhort you, along with Paul, to pray for our leaders, and a good way to do that is through a CWA Prayer/Action Chapter in your own neighborhood with friends and family.  The average number of prayer warriors in a chapter is five to six, so you can easily meet in a home or church room.  Meeting monthly for one or two hours is all you need to do.  CWA provides a monthly Prayer/Action Newsletter with national concerns and I provide updates on state concerns through e-alerts.  Please pray about this opportunity and if you are called to it, send in this application.

CWA of Washington December 14 Action Alert – A Child Is Born

Dear CWA of Washington Friends,

Greetings for a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a most HAPPY NEW YEAR from Concerned Women for America (CWA) of Washington!  We appreciate you and your support all year long, but especially as the Christian world celebrates the REAL REASON FOR THE SEASON, CHRIST JESUS, born as a child in a humble manger.  His unending grace and mercy spread to all who believe in God’s plan of salvation for all of mankind.  What a loving God we have!  Our Father God knows that love cannot be forced; therefore, He allows us to make the choice to receive His only begotten Son and to experience the love, joy, peace, and relationship that all flow from that choice.  What a God we serve!

PRAYER!

Pray for our nation.  CWA is making plans for the New Year in order to represent you and your pro-family Biblical values.  We encourage you to continue to pray for America’s restoration to our religious heritage and for protection of God’s design for the family, as well as our other Core Issues.

Pray within a CWA Prayer/Action Chapter.  Look for a Prayer/Action Chapter in your community on our state webpage.  If there is not a chapter nearby, please consider becoming a Prayer/Action Leader!  I have been one for many years and so enjoy meeting with faithful prayer warriors.  In fact, we had our Christmas luncheon this week and the prayers, fellowship and food were all such an encouragement!  We Christians have such an awesome opportunity to pray together for our nation, our state and our families – don’t  you want to be a part of that?

Sign Up for the 2017 Encourage-A-Legislator Program Today!

“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (Timothy 2:1-4)

Because CWA believes prayer is crucial to revival and restoration of a nation, we are asking you to participate in our Encourage-A-Legislator Campaign for the 2017 Washington Legislative Session.  We are so excited to see what God is going to do in the hearts and minds of our state legislators as we pray for them each day and encourage them through our weekly postcards.

Washington has 147 legislators (49 senators and 98 representatives).  Would you commit to adopt one of them and pray for him or her daily during the ninety-day session from January until April?  And then, send your legislator a postcard weekly with a handwritten personal note.  This short note will be a Scripture verse or quote (CWA will provide this material) as an expression of appreciation for his or her service in the legislature, sharing that you are praying.  The cards are never used to lobby the legislator.

CWA of Washington October 27 Action Alert – Absolutes

Dear CWA of Washington Member,

Washington State continues to make a reputation for itself by being one of the leaders in “progressive” ideas.  Once, when I was in Washington, D.C., someone responded to my statement that I was from Washington State with, “Oh, you’re from the left coast!”  I had never heard that phrase, but if the shoe fits … !

Religious Liberty of Businesses Targeted

Sadly, many of our citizens are suffering because of the “progressive” nature of our state.  Coach Joe Kennedy was fired by the Bremerton School District when he refused to yield to their pressure to stop his short, private prayer on the football field after each game.  Florist Barronelle Stutzman was sued by the state’s attorney general when she declined to celebrate a homosexual wedding by supplying the flowers, although other florists in the Richland area were more than happy to do so.  The Stormans family continues to stand for their right to not supply abortion-causing pharmaceuticals and, again, there are plenty of other pharmacies in the Olympia area willing to profit from those drugs.  In all three cases, it is increasingly clear that the Washington State government is targeting Christians for living out their faith as allowed in the First Amendment:  “Congress shall make no law respecting the freedom of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof … ”  Remember that while those three cases wind their way through the court system, we need to continue to pray for Coach Kennedy, Mrs. Stutzman and the Stormans whose case made it to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which denied their claims and then in June the U. S. Supreme Court refused to hear their case.

Religious Liberty and Parental Rights Targeted In Education

It seems that Washington State’s governing authorities are focused on destroying not only religious liberty in this state, but also on interfering with parental rights again.  For a decade, we have seen our public schools transform from teaching toward objective education standards to increasingly more subjective standards.  Knowing how to get an answer has become more important than actually getting the right answer.  How many of you want an accountant or pharmacist to use that philosophy?  I don’t; that’s for sure!  Now, in addition, the state plans to ignore parental rights and concerns and teach all of our children about “gender fluidity” from Kindergarten on.  Please take a look for yourself, check out Washington’s Health and Physical Education Standards curriculum.  Specifically pages 29 and 32. Consider what those new standards mean for people of faith, with all public-school children learning about gender identity and expression beginning in kindergarten, as well as teachers who disagree with that particular moral leaning being forced to teach something against their moral/religious/ethical conscience.  The state’s argument is that this approach will lessen bullying of children.  This is a strawman, for teaching against bullying for any reason covers this issue.  Bullying is never acceptable.

Plus, as we all know, once abortion was accepted as legal, the number of abortions skyrocketed.  Will we see a similar consequence from teaching our children that they can choose their own “gender”?

CWA’s Seven Core Issues (family and marriage, sanctity of human life, education, sexual exploitation, religious liberty, national sovereignty, and support for Israel) are what we fight for through our involvement in public policy.  We believe that God’s Word provides eternal principles by which we need to live and that man must not ignore or compromise those principles.  That’s rather absolute, isn’t it?   God’s opposition wants us to accept that there are no absolutes and that their subjective approach is much more loving and tolerant.  However, as John Adams said, “Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”  I’m sure that modern day political correctness would not approve of Adams’ statement!

PRAYER and ACTION

PRAY!  Pray for Coach Joe Kennedy, whose private prayer on the football field after games caused him to be fired by the Bremerton School District Judge. Last month, U.S. District Judge Ronald Leighton declined to issue a preliminary injunction that would have forced the Bremerton School District to rehire Coach Joe while his case is litigated.  (District Does Not Have to Rehire Praying Coach).

PRAY!  Pray for the Stormans family who lost their appeal case at the U. S. Supreme Court (US Supreme Court Allows Extreme Washington State Pharmacy Policy to Stand).

 PRAY! Pray for Arlene’s Flowers Owner Barronelle Stutzman who will have a hearing on November 15 at 9:00 a.m., at Bellevue College (State of Washington v. Arlene’s Flowers | Ingersoll v. Arlene’s Flowers) Please pray that Mrs. Stutzman’s case will receive a fair hearing and that her religious liberty will be restored.

TAKE ACTION! A pre-hearing rally for Mrs. Stutzman’s case will be held on November 15 at the Carlson Theatre at Bellevue College.  It will start at 7:30 a.mClick here for more information about this event that Family Policy Institute is putting on.  Be sure to invite friends and family.

TAKE ACTION! VOTE!  Thomas Jefferson once advised:  “If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the responsibility of every American to be informed.”  To be a responsible voter, please learn as much as you can about the candidates and issues.  CWA has several non-partisan guides for the current election, which you can find at concernedwomen.org/she-votes-2016/.
