Earlier this week, Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee (CWALAC) was invited to attend the Congressional Family Caucus’ inaugural event. Rep. Mary Miller (R-Illinois ) felt compelled, alongside Rep. Diana Harshbarger (R-Tennessee) and Rep. Brian Babin (R-Texas), to create this crucial caucus in the wake of the highly controversial “Respect for Marriage Act” that became law in 2022. These members correctly observe the Left’s obsession with eroding the natural family, even though the natural family is essential for a flourishing society.
A measly 30% of college-educated liberals between the age of 18 to 55 say that children are “better off” with married parents. The Left has incessantly claimed that children who are raised by one parent or a same-sex parental unit are equally positioned as a child who is raised by their mother and a father. No matter how many times they try to sell this lie though, it is not true. Study after study shows that a child does best, by almost every measure, throughout their life when raised by their biological mother and father.
These studies should come as no surprise to us since this is exactly how God created this institution, and therefore, intended the family unit to function and flourish. God has placed the unique ability, under the institution of marriage, for a man and a woman to bear a child. This is a powerful thing, something that should be received in reverence and thanksgiving. It is in this sacred institution of marriage that a child should be reared.
Our failure to live up to that standard does not negate that there is a standard. There is no denying that we live in a broken and fallen world. The Lord is in the business of not only forgiving but redeeming situations. We need to approach these broken family units with grace and implement policies that do not further hurt these families.
When announcing the founding of her new caucus Rep. Miller said, “The natural family, a man and a woman committed for life to each other and to their children, is essential for a nation to prosper because the family is the root of self-government, service, community, and personal responsibility.” All throughout the event, it was evident that these three legislators are driven by love, compassion, and their faith, even sharing that many of them are involved in prayer groups that frequently meet to pray specifically over each other, their jobs, and the country. They reminded the crowd that for all the crazy things that happen in the halls of Congress, they seek Jesus in all they do and seek to glorify Him in their work. Rep. Harshbarger shared that if she could teach a middle school Sunday school class for years than working in the halls of Congress is nothing – those who have taught a middle school Sunday school class understand the work it takes!
As the event was coming to a close, Rep. Babin shared that, “Truth is a person, and that person is Jesus Christ!” The Congressman indeed is right, and CWALAC looks forward to working with the Family Congressional Caucus in implementing policies that are pro-family and glorify God to the benefit of all Americans.
