Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA), the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization, applauds the U.S. Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling in favor of a Wisconsin-based Catholic charity, marking a significant win for religious liberty nationwide. The Court’s decision, announced today, reverses the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s judgment and protects religious groups from unconstitutional state interference in defining their religious behavior for tax exemptions.
In a landmark opinion, the justices unanimously ruled that Wisconsin’s attempt to distinguish among religions based on theological differences in their provision of services violated the First Amendment. Justice Sonia Sotomayor emphasized that such actions impose a “denominational preference” that fails the highest level of judicial scrutiny.
“This is a resounding victory for Christians and all faith-based organizations,” said Penny Nance, CEO and President of Concerned Women for America. “The Supreme Court has rightly affirmed that the government cannot entangle itself in defining religious behavior or discriminate against groups like Catholic Charities Bureau, whose Gospel values and moral teachings are central to their mission. We celebrate this decision as a safeguard for religious freedom across America.”
The ruling paves the way for broader protections for religious organizations in line with proven Constitutional protections that ensure they can continue their vital work without unjust governmental burdens. CWA stands with Christian charities and remains committed to defending religious liberty for all.
