CWA Stands with Religious School and Parents

By | Defense of Family, Education, News and Events | No Comments

Today, the United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Carson v. Makin. The case involves a Maine tuition assistance program that discriminates against religious institutions. As Concerned Women for America (CWA) explains in its brief, the case involves serious violations of religious freedoms. The program takes important educational decisions away from families in Maine, treating parents who desire a religious education for their children like second-class citizens.

CWA CEO and President Penny Nance said:

“This state infringes on foundational constitutional rights by denying tuition assistance based on a family’s desire to raise their children according to their faith. Maine’s law seeks to remove religious institutions from the education choices of parents and families who reside there. Parents should have freedom when it comes to their children’s education, whether secular or religious.

“A school’s eligibility to receive funds should not be contingent on the educational institution’s religious beliefs. The state of Maine should honor funds promised in the tuition assistance program regardless of the educational choice of the parent.”

You Showed Up and it Made a Difference! Wonderful Turnout Wednesday!

You Are Needed Again

Last Wednesday’s press conference in opposition to L.D. 820, the taxpayer-funded abortion bill and mandate to insurance companies to cover abortion, was a huge success because you showed up! You showed up on location, and you showed up by contacting your legislators. Lawmakers do take notice when you are willing to take time off from work to come to Augusta to take a stand on a bill.

The Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Service Committee held a hearing-only on L.D. 820. CWA of Maine testified in opposition to the bill at the hearing. You can read our testimonies here and here. There is now a work session on the bill scheduled for Tuesday, April 2. The committee will vote whether or not to send the bill to the House and Senate for a vote.

Action Item:

  • Contact your legislators and politely ask them to oppose L.D. 820.  To find your lawmakers by the town you live in, click Representative and Senator. Be sure to let them know you are a member of Concerned Women for America of Maine.

There is still more work to do!

Paul told the church of Corinth in 1 Corinthians 15:58, “So then, dear brothers and sisters, be firm. Do not be moved! Always be outstanding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” Let’s commit today to stand firm and not be moved in protecting life from conception until natural death and defending the Biblical concept of the genders, male and female.

L.D. 1313 and L.D. 1025 will be heard in committee next week. We need to commit these two very dangerous bills to prayer and to action.  L.D. 1313 would make legal physician-assisted suicide.  L.D. 1025 would prohibit conversion therapy for minors who suffer from same-sex attractions.

Action Items:

  • April 10: Attend the hearings on L.D. 1313 and L.D. 1025. L.D. 1313 will be heard at 9:00 a.m. in Room 209 of the Cross Office Building. L.D. 1025 will be heard at 10:00 a.m. in Room 220 of the same building.
  • Contact your legislators and politely ask them to oppose these two bills. To find your lawmakers by the town you live in, click Representative and Senator. Be sure to let them know you are a member of Concerned Women for America of Maine.
  • Please send this alert to family and friends.

Please Pray with Me, Dear Father, thank You for sending so many of Your people to Augusta Wednesday to stand against abortion.  We need them, and many more, again Tuesday as You know. May they realize we are losing our freedom and only as they show up, stand up, and speak up for You will we prevail. To You be all the glory, honor and praise.  In Jesus’ Name.  Amen.

Thank you for standing with us Wednesday. Please do so once more April 10. It truly makes a difference.  As we learn the outcome of L.D. 820, may it be an encouragement to you.  May you come to understand how important it is to stand publicly for righteousness in our state.
