Safety of Female NCAA Athletes at Risk as Male Player Competes in Div I Women’s Volleyball
San Jose State trans athlete plays first game of season today
Washington, D.C. -Today, Concerned Women for America (CWA), the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization, blasted the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) again for putting the safety and accomplishments of female athletes at risk by continuing to allow a trans-identifying male to compete on the San Jose State University (SJSU) women’s volleyball team. SJSU opens the season today against Louisiana Tech at a pre-conference tournament at Cal State Fullerton.
The identity of trans-identifying player Blaire Fleming, born Brayden, was not publicly known until April 2024. Now a 5th-year senior, Fleming was rostered on SJSU’s team in 2022 and took honors as Offensive Player of the Week in the Mountain West conference. Fleming previously played for Coastal Carolina University but transferred to San Jose State following the implementation of South Carolina’s Women’s Sports Bill that prohibited males from competing in women’s sports.
CWA’s Legislative Strategist Macy Petty, a former NCAA volleyball player, testified in the South Carolina legislature on the Women’s Sport Bill.
“When I testified, the South Carolina legislature could not believe it was a real issue, that biological males would be competing in women’s sports, but that day is here and the NCAA refuses to deal with the disadvantages female athletes have in competing against someone bigger, stronger, and with the ability to hurt them- especially in volleyball,” said Petty. “As a high school athlete, I had to compete against a biological male in front of college recruiters and know how humiliating and painful it is to have that ball slammed in your face over and over again.”
“We’re back to school and the NCAA’s perverse trans athlete policy which is allowing another season of sex discrimination in women’s sports,” said Penny Nance, CEO and President of CWA. “It’s obvious only female athletes take the hit to this injustice. Today’s opening matchup between Louisiana Tech’s all female team against San Jose State’s team with a male player will darken the stain of inequality that women fought so hard to irradicate under Title IX. Concerned Women for America is outraged that immoral leaders are using female athletes to advance their activist ideology and forcing women athletes to be oppressed by a regime prioritizing the desires of feminine men over women’s rights.
“The future of women’s sports is at risk and the rights of women will be trampled if the NCAA does not implement common sense policies that champion female athletes and protect their safety and ability to succeed.”
