Protect North Dakota Children from Obscene Materials

Obscene material continues to be found in children’s sections of public libraries in our state, and Concerned Women for America (CWA) of North Dakota is calling on citizens to take vital action to protect our children from obscenities.

It is reprehensible to have sexually explicit content accessible to children.

Despite legislation passed last session requiring screening for explicit materials in sections of libraries designated for children, obscene materials continue to be offered to young people in libraries and schools in our state.

SB 2307 proposes to strengthen our law to prevent minors from accessing obscenity. This legislation not only requires libraries to implement safety policies that limit access to sexually explicit material to minors, it also allows for a penalty upon non-compliance of the law.

Taxpayers should not be forced to pay for material that is harmful to children. We have laws that prohibit private bookstores, etc., from selling obscene content to minors. We must hold our taxpayer-funded libraries, like our public schools, to the same standard. Allowing children to view sexually explicit material is considered child abuse, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

SB 2307 needs a “do pass” recommendation from the House Judiciary Committee. It passed in the Senate with a vote of 27 to 20.
