There are significant cases before the United States Supreme Court at the moment. In two months, we’ve had four high-stakes cases that have grave implications for the issues we care about. I write to get the Justices in your minds as you pray throughout this season heading into June when these cases are expected to be decided.
As you are probably aware, the lawfare going on around the country against President Donald Trump is weighing heavily on the Supreme Court, and there is a lot of pressure coming from many different places (legal, political, cultural, spiritual). Rouge, radical actors, who also happen to be judges, are ignoring the law, fancying themselves some types of anti-Trump heroes and ignoring the law to try somehow to “stop him.”
You probably heard of the unbelievable story of the Milwaukee judge who FBI agents arrested after she helped an illegal alien who had committed multiple crimes evade ICE agents while in her courtroom. She is just one of many judges taking radical action against the Trump Administration; swift action is needed to combat these activist judges that will ultimately have to come from the Supreme Court.
Let us, please put the Justices near the top of our list of people to pray when we pray for our country. Pray for that overall attack that is coming against our Constitutional order, and pray for these four cases heard recently:
- The question in Catholic Charities Bureau v. Wisconsin Labor & Industry Review Commission is whether Wisconsin acted unconstitutionally as it denied Catholic Charities a tax exemption because it deemed them not religious enough. At oral arguments, it seemed most Justices were skeptical of the government determining what practices were religious enough. Even Justice Elena Kagan discussed how some religions proselytize while others don’t and said, “I thought it was pretty fundamental that we don’t treat some religions different than others.”
- Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic is an effort to enforce a state law determining Planned Parenthood is not qualified to participate in Medicaid. The arguments on this one turned to several procedural matters that can complicate the main issue as a pro-life effort. So, let us pray that the Justices can stay focused and uphold the rights of states to prefer life over abortion.
- In Mahmoud v. Taylor, parents are fighting against an evil, pro-LGBTQ-indoctrinating curriculum that students are forced to endure without the opportunity of an opt-out, even for religious reasons. The anti-religious animus at oral arguments was palpable, though once again, the conservative Justices seemed poised to step in to protect religious liberty.
- Finally, pray for Oklahoma Statewide Charter School Board v. Drummond, where Oklahoma seeks to cancel a contract with a Catholic school because of its religious affiliation. I write to you on the day of oral arguments for this one, so stay tuned to our website for an update on how they went and how to continue to pray.
As always, I am proud to bend the knee with you on these matters and thank God for His calling in your lives to be salt and light in the public square.
