Last week, Instagram added a new feature to its platform: Instagram “Instants.”
Instagram describes Instants as “a new way to share in the moment, with spontaneous, unfiltered photos, with friends.” Instants are disappearing messages; a product feature most closely associated with rival social media platform, Snapchat, and one which child safety advocates have warned leaves children vulnerable to exploitation, bullying, and abuse.
Disappearing messages are often marketed as casual and private. Inconsequential, even. The promise is that the message disappears so there’s no paper trail, nothing that can be found later and used against you. But as with most things involving social media, this is only half the story, creating a false sense of security while masking genuine risks.
Adolescence is a period of heightened sensitivity to peer approval, social pressure, and impulsive decision-making. Researchers have repeatedly found that teens are more responsive than adults to social feedback and reward cues. In that environment, disappearing messages can lower the perceived stakes of a risky exchange. The message seems temporary, so the choice can feel temporary, too. But the effects are not temporary when a child is bullied, blackmailed, pressured, or drawn into conversations they are not equipped to handle. The false promise of impermanence can become a powerful tool for permanent harm.
With Instagram Instants, as the organization Protect Young Eyes notes, “the photo is automatically sent to everyone on your child’s Friends list unless they manually switch it to “Close Friends” beforehand… Most kids won’t notice that toggle, and one accidental tap of the shutter button means a photo has already been broadcast to dozens, or hundreds, of people.”
A message sent impulsively can lead to instant embarrassment, shame, and regret. For an adolescent, those feelings can linger and compound over time leading to significant mental health harm. And while Instagram does offer a brief “undo” button right after sending, if you don’t react immediately, the damage is already done.
Disappearing images on Snapchat have long been known to facilitate “sexting” among teens. Girls feel safer sharing intimate images because they think the evidence will disappear; and while Snapchat does include Screenshot Detection Alerts, those are easily bypassed by taking pictures of the screen with a second device.
Meanwhile, the company has faced multiple lawsuits, alleging that child predators have habitually used the platform to groom, extort, and sexually exploit children.
For those concerned with child safety online, disappearing messages compound the problem by reducing accountability. Harassment, coercion, threats, and manipulation are all harder to report and investigate when the record is designed to evaporate. Parents cannot review what happened. Schools struggle to verify abuse that spills from phones into hallways and classrooms. Platforms themselves have less usable context when users seek help. And law enforcement or child-protection investigators may face greater difficulty preserving evidence after harm has already occurred, making it harder for enforcement authorities to prosecute.
According to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Snapchat was the most widely used platform for online grooming. Lawsuits allege that disappearing photos and messages enable predators to groom and abuse children. According to Snap’s own internal data, nearly one quarter of the 6,000 13 to 24-year-olds surveyed were victims of sextortion online.
Instagram’s embrace of disappearing messages now is especially puzzling as it comes at a time when Meta (the parent company of Instagram) is trying to sell American parents on the safety features of their new “Teen” accounts and when social media companies like Snap and Meta are facing increased scrutiny for unethical business practices that put children at risk. Independent reporting and advocacy research have continued to document unwanted contact, unsafe content, and failures of youth protections on Instagram despite repeated assurances that safeguards are improving.
Disappearing messages risk making a difficult problem worse by shifting more interaction into a format that is less reviewable, less auditable, and easier to exploit. If a company is still struggling to protect minors in ordinary messaging environments, it should not expand tools that make oversight weaker by design. Before social media companies roll out features modeled on ephemerality and impulse, they should have to show that those features are compatible with child safety, meaningful moderation, and basic accountability.
Until then, copying Snapchat’s disappearing-message model is not a harmless product update. It is a decision to favor frictionless engagement over the traceability that protection often requires, and young users will bear the cost.
