Don’t Leave Faith-Based Adoption Agencies Unprotected; Support HB 2678

By March 14, 2018Kansas

HB 2678, Adoption Protection, is needed in Kansas.  If not passed, it will leave our adoption agencies open to lawsuits and legislation that would force faith-based adoption agencies to adopt out to same-sex couples or shut down.  This has already happened in several states.  Don’t let Kansas be the next.

Massachusetts and the District of Columbia have declared that all state-licensed adoption agencies must place children in homes of same-sex couples, forcing faith-based agencies to close. Illinois has passed legislation requiring private agencies to license unmarried and same-sex couples as foster parents.  Faith-based agencies that refused to comply were unable to renew their contracts with the state.

Now Alabama, Virginia, South Dakota and North Dakota have all passed legislation allowing faith-based adoption agencies to operate according to their religious beliefs.  May Kansas be the next.

Over a month ago HB 2678 was referred to the House Committee on Federal and State Affairs, and there it sits.  We need the committee to have a hearing on it and for Speaker Ron Ryckman (R-District 78) to be on board to allow it to be debated on the House floor.  Please take just a few minutes to assist us in these efforts.

All Kansans should be free to peacefully live and work consistently with their beliefs without fear of government intrusion.  We are constitutionally guaranteed the freedom to exercise our religion. We should not have to shut down our operations because of our deeply held religious beliefs.

Please Take Action:

  1. Contact House Committee on Federal and State affairs, Chairman John Barker (R-District 70) at 785-296-7674 and barker@house.ks.gov. Urge him to have a hearing on HB 2678. Be sure to let him know that you are a member of Concerned Women for America of Kansas.
  2. Contact Speaker of the House Ron Ryckman at 785-296-2302 and at ryckman@house.ks.gov. Urge him to please allow HB 2678 to be debated if and when it comes to the House Floor. Be sure to let him know that you are a member of Concerned Women for America of Kansas.

Please Pray for the legislators and groups that are banning together such as the Catholic Charities, American Family Policy, CWA of Kansas and many churches.  Pray for the Lord’s wisdom and guidance as we come up again strong opposition.

Getting this bill through the process is important because it will protect faith based agencies.  We have elections coming up, and we do not know what kind of executive orders the newly elected governor will be giving.  We need this protection in place to exercise our religious freedom that we are guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution.

Thank you for your faithful prayers, action, and support of CWA of Kansas.

Blessings,
