CWALAC Applauds House Effort to Stop IRS Proposed Rule Trampling First Amendment Free Speech

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the House of Representatives is set to vote on Rep. Dave Camp’s (R-Michigan) Stop Targeting of Political Beliefs by the IRS Act of 2014, H.R. 3865. This legislation would prohibit the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from finalizing its proposed regulation that would restrict First Amendment rights of free speech for 501(c)(4) organizations. Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee’s President and CEO, Penny Nance, has this to say about the legislation:

“Rep. Camp’s bill is needed to prevent the IRS from overstepping its bounds and squashing our First Amendment rights. The IRS proposed regulation hampers our grassroots advocacy activities which are not political.

“The IRS is discriminatorily modifying speech for only one segment of the tax-exempt 501(c) organizations and not for the other segments. This allows well-funded labor unions to get out their message, while hamstringing groups who may have opposing views.

“”It is no surprise that President Obama has issued a Statement of Administration policy threatening to veto H.R. 3865, since they will use this regulation as a tool to silence conservatives during this important election year.”
