Apparently, under the Shapiro administration, even the word “woman” is becoming too controversial for Pennsylvania’s health regulations.
The Department of Health is proposing changes that would replace terms such as “pregnant woman” and “mother of a newborn” with terms including “pregnant individual,” “birthing individual,” and “postpartum individual.”
Why does this matter? Because words matter. Truth matters. Women matter. Mothers matter. When government removes the word “woman” from regulations specifically addressing pregnancy and motherhood, it is more than a change in terminology. It risks erasing women from the very language meant to describe them.
Concerned Women for America (CWA) of Pennsylvania strongly opposes replacing words such as “pregnant woman” and “mother of a newborn” with gender-neutral terminology.
This proposal is NOT yet law, which means we still have an opportunity to speak.
