Greetings Mississippians,
We need YOU to act in the great state of Mississippi to protect the future of your children and grandchildren’s education.
In Mississippi, as in over 40 other states, the state adopted the national Common Core standards in English and math in 2010, and the aligned standardized tests, in order to score points on a federal grant competition. This is an abdication of state sovereignty (which the Founders intended to preserve citizen-directed government). It is also a blue-print for further federal takeover that end-runs the legislature.
So what do you get, when you cut the people and their legislatures out of the process? Dumbed-down standards! Mississippi now abides by the national Common Core standards, and they are of poor quality:
- They fail to prepare students for studies in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). They put our students two years behind their peers in high-performing countries by eighth grade, and they are even worse for high school.
- In English language arts, Common Core severely de-emphasizes the study of classic literature in favor of drab and simplistic “informational” texts. It does this despite the fact that the overwhelming evidence is that children should be reading more, not less, classic literature.
- Prominent child psychiatrists and psychologists have heavily criticized the standards as being age-inappropriate for young children.
Our leaders are not listening! They have still not decided whose side they are on – the side of Mississippi parents and children or the side of big businesses (k-12 public education is a $600 billion per year industry), Washington, D.C. bureaucrats and outside special-interest groups.
The Common Core battle is raging all over the nation, and you have the opportunity to make a difference. To learn more about Common Core Standards, go to www.stopcommoncore.com.
We are asking you to call legislative leaders in Mississippi on a matter of critical importance to the defense of the Constitution -fighting the national Common Core takeover of education. Please call and tell your leaders in Jackson that they must lead Mississippi out of the Common Core this session.
Urge the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor and Speaker Gunn to stop Common Core. Mississippi needs to pull out of the Common Core and return control to parents and local communities.
Call Governor Bryant: 601-359-3150
Call Lt. Gov. Reeves: 601-359-3200
Call Speaker Gunn: 601-359-3300
The legislative session is well under way, and it is critical that you make these phone calls.
Thank you for making a difference!
We cannot do this alone. It will take the prayers and efforts of each one of us to reverse course and return sovereignty to Mississippi citizens.
