Urgent: Compel State Legislators to Protect the U.S. Constitution

The 2026 Legislative Session began Tuesday, January 13, with Gov. Larry Rhoden’s State of the State address. Highlighting his speech were freedom, property tax relief, public safety, education, chemical abortion, etc.

Wednesday, January 14, followed with the  State of the Judiciary address by Chief Justice Steven Jensen and State of the Tribes by the President of the Rosebud Sioux tribe, President Kathleen Wooden Knife.

Upcoming Bills

SJR 502 is a resolution applying to Congress for a Constitutional Convention for the purpose of setting the number of U.S. Supreme Court Justices at nine. While we cautiously support setting those numbers at nine, we do not support this proposed method. Having a Constitutional Convention would put the U.S. Constitution at risk of revision. A much safer method to amend the Constitution is the way in which Constitutional Amendments have been added to our Constitution 27 times without risking the entire document.

SJR 502 will most likely be heard in committee on Friday, January 23, and then go to the full Senate for a vote the following week.

SJR 503 is another application to Congress for a Constitutional Convention, aka the Convention of States (COS), to impose fiscal restraints on the federal government (the Constitution already does this) and rein in the federal government (again, this is something the Constitution does).

The Constitution must not be opened to revisions. If lawmakers would simply follow the Constitution, all of these issues would be resolved. If they don’t obey the Constitution now, would adding another amendment make a difference? “We the People” must hold our lawmakers accountable to the oath they took to the Constitution.

SJR 503 will most likely be heard in committee next week on the same day as SJR 502 and then go to the full Senate for a vote the following week.

ACTION! Contact your state senator and ask him/her to oppose SJR 502 and SJR 503. Find your state senator here. Then go to the Legislator Listing to find their email. Be sure to let them know that you are a member of Concerned Women for America of South Dakota. The more they hear from us as an organization, the more they are likely to listen to us as I and members of the steering committee lobby them at the capitol this session.
