URGENT ALERT: Stop Common Core in North Carolina – TODAY!

By June 2, 2014North Carolina

House Bill 1061/Senate Bill 812 Replace Common Core to Meet NC’s Needs: This bill removes Common Core State Standards from General Statute. By doing so, the bill clarifies the State Board of Education’s authority over the direction and content of North Carolina education standards. Read the bill.

1. Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is an Assault on States’ Rights and Local Control. The CCSS initiative is unconstitutional and is an affront to states’ rights as outlined in the Tenth Amendment.

HB 1061 keeps the federal government from interfering with educational standards that are, according to the Constitution, the authority of North Carolina.

2. Supporters of CCSS claim that the development of the standards was a “state-led” effort, but that simply is not true. Neither state boards of education, state legislators nor local education officials, school leaders, teachers, nor parents were included in the development, evaluation, and adoption of CCSS.

According to Lt. Governor Dan Forest: HB 1061/SB 812 Replace Common Core to Meet NC’s Needs, “puts control of education back into the hands of North Carolina, where it belongs.” Read Lt Governor Dan Forest’s Informative Testimony at the North Carolina LRC Common Core State Standards Study Committee.

3. Common Core is a Lowering of Education Standards. Dr. Sandra Stotsky, Professor Emerita at the University of Arkansas served on the Common Core Validation Committee. She cited poor quality, empty skill sets, the de-emphasis on literature and low reading levels. Common Core is not higher standards; it is experimental standards!
If passed, HB1061/SB812 will create a standards review commission that will be able to make recommendations to the State Board of Education for needed changes.
