Just eight days before Christmas, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives narrowly passed a significant constitutional amendment expanding abortion by a vote of 102 to 101.
HB1957 would amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to create a sweeping, permanent “right” to abortion, preventing the state from enacting or enforcing meaningful protections for unborn children or their mothers. By placing abortion policy into the Constitution, the bill would override existing safeguards and leave little to no ability for future lawmakers or voters to limit abortion, even late in pregnancy. Its advancement to the Pennsylvania Senate marks a profound moral turning point and a pivotal moment in the Commonwealth’s ongoing debate over abortion.
The House’s approval is only the beginning. To amend the Pennsylvania Constitution, the exact same language must pass both the House and Senate in two consecutive sessions before it can be placed on the ballot for a statewide election.
