“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)
James Talarico, an aspiring “pastor” who supports abortion, open borders, and LGBTQ+ ideology, is running as the Democrat candidate to be the next U.S. Senator from Texas. In November, Talarico will face Ken Paxton (R) in this highly anticipated race.
This election is not just the typical battle for who will serve a term in Washington. It is also a visible representation of the spiritual warfare that is played out in American politics. In Matthew 4, Satan cynically twists the Word of God to tempt Jesus while on a mountain. In the same way, Talarico blasphemes the name of Christ to justify unbiblical policies, like the transing of children and denying the right to life to the unborn. However, we should not be surprised. Scripture emphasizes that, as Christians, we do not fight against flesh and blood but against the spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12). The battle for power in our country is not a struggle between left versus right but rather light against darkness.
In a recent interview, Talarico claimed that “Jesus never talks about abortion … the Bible is silent on abortion.” This lie comes straight from the wicked mind of Satan. When we look at the truth of Scripture, we see that the Lord cares deeply about the sanctity of life (Jeremiah 1:5, Exodus 20:13, Psalm 139:13-14, Matthew 19:14-15, etc.). Throughout the Old Testament, God abhors nations that engage in child sacrifice (Jeremiah 7:31, 2 Kings 16:3). In his negligence of Scripture to promote cultural lies, James Talarico is both rejecting the truth laid out in the Word of God and deceiving the public.
In 2021, Talarico delivered a “prayer” on the Texas House floor in which he referred to God as “many names.” He sacrilegiously claimed,
“The Torah calls you Creator. The Quaran calls you Peace. The Gita calls you Destroyer. The Dharma calls you Truth, and the First Epistle of John calls you perhaps the most beautiful name of all, Love.”
Talarico is also deeply intertwined with universalism (the belief that all humankind will eventually be saved) and delivered a sermon titled God is Not a Christian: Confronting Nationalism to the Red River Unitarian Universalist Church in Denison, Texas.
In John 14:6, Jesus proclaimed, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” All roads of faith do not lead to Heaven. There are many false gods, teachers, and faiths. Only through salvation in Christ is anyone able to have everlasting life. Through his seeming affirmation of many faiths, Talarico shows that he is not a Christian. He is a wolf dressed in sheep’s clothing who abuses Scripture to fit his political agenda.
Unfortunately, Talarico is not alone. The darkness of this world is lurking around every corner, just waiting to strike when no one is watching. We must recognize its deception as it comes to divide and destroy us.
Friends, our country, our children, our lives, are on the line. If Christians do not stand for truth in this spiritual battle, our country will reap the consequences. Our policies will be driven by heretics who do not fear God, and our nation will grow further away from the Truth upon which America was founded.
A heretic like James Talarico winning a primary to run for federal office serves as a wake-up call to Christians across the country: Will you sit idly by in the battle of light and darkness? Or will you rise to boldly speak the truth in love? The choice is yours. “If not us, then who? If not now, then when?” – President Ronald Reagan
