Encourage-A-Legislator Program

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” – I Timothy 2:1-2

The Call to Prayer

I Timothy 2:1-2 instructs us to pray for our leaders. Concerned Women for America’s (CWA) Encourage-A-Legislator (EAL) program offers our members and friends the vehicle to do this in an easy and meaningful way. It ensures consistent prayer for each legislator, and it encourages and builds bridges with conservative legislators as well as those who do not normally agree with us.

Whether a legislator is a believer, non-believer, conservative, liberal, Democrat, Republican, independent, or other, they need our prayers. This next legislative session, CWA plans to deliver those prayers.

The Goal

The goal of the EAL program is to encourage each member of the State House and Senate by praying for them on a regular basis and sending them a postcard throughout the legislative session.

The EAL program is never used to lobby and, therefore, is never confrontational. It is simply a great way to lift up those in authority and encourage them in their responsibilities.

The Commitment

We provide the name and address of the assigned legislator(s) and the postcards, and you commit to praying for your assigned legislator(s) daily, if possible, while the legislature is in session, and then mail an EAL postcard weekly until the conclusion of the twenty-week session.

The Texas Legislature

The 2023 Texas Legislature is in session from January 10 till approximately May 29 and consists of 150 House members and 31 Senate members.

A Prayerful Perspective from Fort Myers

By | Florida | No Comments

My heart has been heavy and hurting, as I am sure yours has been, too, for those who suffered from Hurricane Ian. A week before the hurricane hit, I attended the Fort Myers Prayer/Action Chapter meeting and met the lovely ladies who are Spirit-filled, powerful, praying women, who love what God loves, hate what God hates, fight for the vulnerable, and stand for righteousness.

Fort Myers took a direct hit from the hurricane, which devastated the community. I was eager to hear from them when they got cell service and respond to my texts about how they were doing and how we could help. The following responses give you a feel for what some endured and how to pray.

Nancy Mastous, Fort Myers Prayer/Action Chapter secretary: We feel the prayers – we fared fair, but that was the scariest day of my life. My daughter and her family, who live two doors away, stood for almost three hours in sewage and spent three hours in the attic with their girls and two dogs with floaties from their pool. As the water receded, they walked, tied together, in raw sewage to my house. We tore up the carpet and have a mess, but thanks be to God, we are livable. It’s heartbreaking but being safe is amazing. Our God has protected most bodies, and most things can be replaced.

Karen Dorfman, Fort Myers Prayer/Action Chapter Leader: The hurricane has left me feeling many emotions. Tears flow over the sadness that so many around me have lost everything. Their entire life is out on the street to be thrown into the garbage. Worse, some have lost loved ones. Yet there is a sweetness in the midst of it. The endless stories of people helping dig mud from homes, pull up carpets, and tear out drywall. Washing sewage from a friend’s clothes. Giving strangers meals and churches piled high with supplies. We are on mission. This is what missionaries do. I thank the Lord that He has given me the gift of Hurricane Ian. The Lord has provided, strengthened, and shown His steadfast love throughout this tragic act. Tragedy changes hearts. It is easy to be complacent and take simple things like water and electricity and to be able to read your Bible for granted. When our electricity came on after five days and the water after nine days, both times, I instantly fell to my knees in tears and thanked the Lord. My heart will never be the same after this, and that is exactly what God wanted all along. My Heart.

I am proud of these ladies and their faithfulness and trust in God. They decided they would still hold their monthly meeting in October and not let anything stop them from interceding in prayer for our nation. May we pray for them. May we follow their example.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble…The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Psalm 46:1,7

That’s Not What the Court Said

By | LBB, Legal, News and Events, Religious Issues, Religious Liberty, SCOTUS, Substack | No Comments

The legacy media lies. I hope you know that. They distort the truth and paint everything in the light most favorable to their preferred political desires. In other words, they tell news stories in ways that can help the radical left and the Democratic Party while hurting conservatives and the Republican Party. Do not let yourself be manipulated.

This week the Supreme Court released an order in a case called Yeshiva University v. YU Pride Alliance. The headlines as the U.S. Supreme Court took procedural action on the case are all sounding the familiar pro-LGBTQ+ tune synonymous with the leftist legacy media. “Supreme Court Says Yeshiva University Must Allow L.G.B.T. Group as Case Proceeds,” wrote The New York Times. Similar slants were all over the usual leftist newspapers, and commentators on social media took the bait.

Only one problem. The Supreme Court has not made any decision on the merits of the case. As I mentioned, they took procedural action. The school has not exhausted all state remedies before asking the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene. There is nothing uncommon about this, and in fact, the Court must be able to manage the enormous number of cases that it is asked to hear. They want lower courts to do the right thing and dispense of cases correctly below. They are hoping the same is done in this case….

Waiting on the Lord

By | LBB, News and Events | No Comments

Jesus asked a simple question of the disciples, “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46 NIV). He was stressing that He was to be Lord (the Master of our lives) not just called Lord. He commands, we obey. He leads, we follow. He plans, we execute. It is why Paul identified us as “slaves of Christ” (see Ephesians 6:5, for example).

This reality is most challenging when the command is for us to wait on the Lord. Listen to Psalm 27:14 (ESV), “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” As activists, we are geared towards action, which is not a bad thing—unless we are ignoring the command of the Lord at any given time to “Be still, and know that I am God…” (Psalm 46:10a NIV). The promises for our faithfulness in waiting are varied and glorious. Take Isaiah 40:31 (ESV), for example, “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint” or Lamentations 3:25 (ESV), “The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him.” It is good to wait on the Lord!

But life is hard. We look at overwhelming injustice around us and we want action. This is always the case when it comes to legal matters. The courts move traditionally at a very slow pace. Resolution of one case merely means the start of the long and arduous appellate process that will take us, after multiple cases on a single issue, to a resolution at the Supreme Court.

The recent speech by the President or the  Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other intelligence agencies’ abuses and injustices that seem to only multiply are also other examples of areas of frustration where we want action. We want reform. We want accountability in the political landscape. That is fine, as long as we keep our heavenly kingdom perspective and ultimate hope, right? We cannot let hopelessness settle within our hearts.

But, if we are truthful with ourselves, some of us frankly get tired of waiting on the Lord. We still call Him Lord, but do not trust Him.

Let us repent of this attitude for “The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you…” (2 Peter 3:9 ESV).

Pray: “Father, recalibrate my heart, and recenter my gaze upon You, my Lord and my only source of hope. Amen.”

A Prayer of Thanksgiving that Roe is No More

By | Dobbs, Legal, News and Events, Sanctity of Life, SCOTUS | No Comments

As the deer pants for the water,

So we have longed to see

Your righteousness restored, oh Lord

With the demise of abortion on demand in our land.

This was a seemingly impossible task,

The world told us.

“Abortion is our right,”

They screamed, as millions of babies died.

For fifty years Roe hung

Like an evil dark cloud of judgment

While many mocked You and Your Word

As approving of such barbarity.

But we, the remnant, had faith in You,

In justice and truth.

We drank the tears of repentance for our nation

And prayed diligently, without ceasing.

We hoped in God alone,

Therefore, we know our redemption

Was secured. Those who trust in You

Are never disappointed!

Thank You, Father!

Thank You, Jesus, the Son!

Thank You Holy Spirit, for guiding us!

All glory to You.

As hard as we have worked,

To see this day of joyful deliverance,

We know it was not our efforts,

But the Lord’s grace. Amen!

Grace, grace!

God’s grace!

That grace that pardons and cleanses within,

Grace that is greater than all our sins.

Even the great sin of abortion

Melts away— as far as the East is from the West

Your grace removes our transgression

And gives us hope for the future.

Now, we pray peace in our land, Lord.

Calm the hearts not set on you,

Let not the Enemy use and abuse

Any more women in the cause of death.

Help us to care for all mothers

And their children, born and unborn.

Help us to trust and pray, even more,

Until the day of Your return.

Amen.

Steady as the Enemy Panics on Abortion

By | Dobbs, Legal, News and Events, Sanctity of Life | No Comments

Let darkness squelch and screech at the loss of the sacrifices they value. The violent among them will stir up the multitudes to fulfill their vision and protest that the innocent are no longer as expendable. The undiscerning mob is sure to follow whichever way the wind blows, tossed to and fro — used, abused, and ultimately discarded.

They shall fail. The end of Roe is yet to be at the appointed time.

Remember how we have gotten to this point. Our almost 50 years of struggle against the evil of abortion centered not on legislation or legal battles but on prayer.

He who is able to give life and give it more abundantly told us that, as He reminded us, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John. 10:10). Darkness has its nature. It will act according to it. The desperation and hopelessness they feel will make them do irrational things.

But the people of God shall stand firm and take action (Daniel 11:32). Prayer is action.

Therefore, pray.

Concerned Women for America (CWA) is making our Dobbs prayer guide available to you through this link.

Scripture tells us that we are “able to stand against the schemes of the devil” by putting on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18). We stand:

    1. Having fastened on the belt of truth,
    2. Having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
    3. As shoes for our feet, we put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace,
    4. We take up the shield of faith, with which we can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one,
    5. We put on the helmet of salvation,
    6. And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The promised result is that we will “be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”

Steady, then. We know where our hope is laid.

The leaked opinion is indeed promising—inspiring even. It states simple truths as it lays out Roe’s unethical, unconstitutional foundations. But we cannot reward the malicious tactics that have been used to release it to the public. So, we will wait until the official word from the Court, and then we will celebrate with thanksgiving to God, shining a light that darkness may flee.

The statement from CWA CEO and President Penny Nance, following the breaking news, laid out this righteous vision:

“The betrayal of trust we have witnessed today at the United States Supreme Court by what is reportedly the malicious leak of a private draft of the Court’s Dobbs opinion is outrageous.

“This appears to be another attempt by the Left to intimidate the justices to uphold a law that is clearly unconstitutional. On the contrary, these tactics should only embolden the Court to stand firm on law and principle. Chief Justice John Roberts must take charge of his court and issue this decision as soon as possible, sending a clear message that the Court will never be intimidated.

“The hundreds of thousands of members of Concerned Women for America remain prayerful and cautiously optimistic as we work to provide loving alternatives to the violent ending of a human life through abortion.”

Amen.

A Prayer for Ukraine

By | International, News and Events, Prayer | No Comments

A people suffer at the hand of a tyrant, Lord,
The innocent trapped among the unjust ambitions
Of those who seek power and dominance
So, we come to You for guidance and help.

For You are a Just Judge, Sovereign Father,
You hear the cry of the poor and desolate
And abhor the proud and haughty.
Let Your swift judgment unfold over all the earth.

Bring to light what is unknown
That Your name be praised among all.
Do not let evil men get away with their oppression
Of the humble and displaced.

We pray against this unjust war in Ukraine.
We pray for peace and order and fruitfulness.
We pray for a miraculous unfolding—a frustrating
That turns all meant for evil, for good.

We rejoice at the thought,
Recognizing Your holy signature in such themes—
Over and again, throughout history
The wicked fail, only You prevail.

Let it be so yet again, Lord.
Help us to speak boldly and in truth
To lift our voices in prayer and denunciation
Exposing the dark works of unrighteousness,

And coming to the aid of those who are in need,
The children, and women, most vulnerable of all.
We pray that hope may increase, for it never fails—
Not when You are it, our Hope. Be that for Ukraine.

Amen.

Supreme Court Releases Opinions in Texas Abortion Law Cases

By | CWA of Texas, Dobbs, LBB, Legal, News and Events, Sanctity of Life, SCOTUS | No Comments

As we discussed recently, the state of Texas presented a novel problem to the United States Supreme Court by enacting a law prohibiting abortions after a heartbeat is detected, but giving the right of enforcement to private citizens and not to any state official. Today, the Court handed down its opinion dismissing most of the claims but preserving the challenge going forward. Here is a short summary.

When abortionists sought to challenge S. B. 8, the Texas Heartbeat Act, they really had no one to sue because no state official is charged with its enforcement and no private citizen had sued. Still, they tried to push the legal envelope by suing a whole host of people, including state judges or state law clerks, the attorney general, some licensing officials, and even a potential private citizen defendant in an effort to enjoin the law and prevent it from going into effect.

The United States also tried to intervene, given its radical pro-abortion stance under President Joe Biden. That was the easy part (United States v. Texas). Its claim was summarily dismissed by the Court (8-1), as expected, with only Justice Sotomayor dissenting. The United States simply has no business interfering with this state law and basically seeking an unprecedented injunction against all persons in the country. Their effort would break with the most fundamental principles of federalism in our Constitution.

The more interesting challenge (Whole Woman’s Health v. Jackson) is a bit more complicated. In its opinion, the Court wanted to stress first what it was not deciding. “In this preliminary posture, the ultimate merits question, whether S. B. 8 is consistent with the Federal Constitution, is not before the Court,” said Justice Neil Gorsuch who wrote the majority opinion.

He summarized, “The Court concludes that the petitioners may pursue a pre-enforcement challenge against certain of the named defendants but not others.” So, who can be sued? Well, not court officials: “Under the doctrine of sovereign immunity, named defendants Penny Clarkston (a state-court clerk) and Austin Jackson (a state court judge) should be dismissed.” Not the attorney general: “Texas Attorney General Paxton should be dismissed.” And not a private citizen prematurely (an affidavit showed he had no intention to sue): “The sole private defendant, Mr. Dickson, should be dismissed.”

But the Court leaves open “other defendants (Stephen Carlton, Katherine Thomas, Allison Benz, and Cecile Young), each of whom is an executive licensing official who may or must take enforcement actions against the petitioners if the petitioners violate the terms of Texas’s Health and Safety Code, including S. B. 8. Eight Members of the Court hold that sovereign immunity does not bar a pre-enforcement challenge to S. B. 8 against these defendants.”

Justice Clarence Thomas dissented from this last pronouncement, saying he would have dismissed the case against “all respondents, including the four licensing officials.”

It also declared “petitioners may bring a pre-enforcement challenge in federal court as one means to test S. B. 8’s compliance with the Federal Constitution. Other pre-enforcement challenges are possible too; one such case is ongoing in state court in which the plaintiffs have raised both federal and state constitutional claims against S. B. 8. Any individual sued under S. B. 8 may raise state and federal constitutional arguments in his or her defense without limitation.”

So, the bottom line is that the challenge to this law will continue as to the allowed defendants.

It is important to note that Chief Justice Roberts, joined by Justices Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor, expressed considerable frustration with the law in concurring in part and dissenting in part. He wrote, “Texas has employed an array of stratagems designed to shield its unconstitutional law from judicial review.”

It seems clear the Chief views the law as an attack on the Court itself. “The clear purpose and actual effect of S. B. 8 has been to nullify this Court’s rulings … Indeed, ‘[i]f the legislatures of the several states may, at will, annul the judgments of the courts of the United States, and destroy the rights acquired under those judgments, the constitution itself becomes a solemn mockery.’[] The nature of the federal right infringed does not matter; it is the role of the Supreme Court in our constitutional system that is at stake,” he wrote.

We will have to wait for a further challenge to see where the more conservative justices land on the issue.

As I mentioned before, this problem is of the Court’s own making, by injecting itself into the political abortion debate. Texas is simply trying to protect life, which most of its citizens demand, and trying to work within the arbitrary and dubious parameters the Supreme Court has set up. The best way for the Court to guard its legitimacy would be to reverse Roe and Casey in the Dobbs case, and then states like Texas would be free to protect life, without having to come up with innovative ideas to appease the Supreme Court’s personal preferences.

Senate Dems Want to Sacrifice Our Daughters on the Altar of Political Correctness

Senate Dems Want to Sacrifice Our Daughters on the Altar of Political Correctness

Washington D.C. – Upon return from the Thanksgiving holiday, the U.S. Senate will consider the FY 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), including a provision requiring young women to register with the Selective Service for a potential military draft. The U.S. House of Representatives passed its own version of the annual defense bill with a similar provision in September. The House version also includes funds for CRT training, diversity officers, and inclusion and equity programs.

This monumental, unjustified reversal in policy forces our military to be sex-blind in all selection, training, and service of draftees, erasing key biological differences between males and females that have everything to do with readiness in wartime. Further, the provision gives the federal government blanket discretion to institute a draft for any number of unspecified reasons.

Penny Nance, CEO and President of Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee, had this to say:

“The recent role that woke ideology played in the Virginia election should have been a wakeup call for Congress. Instead, current language in the funding bill for America’s military and military academies contains the same ideology soundly rejected across the nation. CRT funding and woke diversity officers are part of the Left’s effort to deconstruct the U.S. military and our academies. Add to the mix language forcing women to register for Selective Service (i.e. the draft) and language specifically prohibiting military leaders for making decisions based on sex is disastrous policy that will cost lives.

“Concerned Women for America admires and supports the strong, patriotic women who volunteer for military service, but we refuse to believe the destructive lie that women’s equality means sameness with men. American women do not need to be conscripted to fight on the frontline of war to prove their worth.

“Even after a three-year, $45 million taxpayer funded commission’s unsubstantiated recommendation, a 2021 Ipsos poll shows that support for drafting women has nosedived—especially among females—since the issues was last debated in 2016, with only 45% of Americans and a third of women in favor of the policy.

“We are also witnessing growing enthusiasm from both parties to repeal the Selective Service altogether. At a time of such deep division, we rarely see this harmony. This makes any call to expand this outdated agency’s purpose and reach even more tone-deaf.

“Fresh off the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan and a terror attack that took the lives of 13 U.S. servicemembers, Americans are rightfully weary to award new mobilization powers to the government. Trusting this Administration—or any other—with the unchecked latitude to declare a national emergency and conscript 18- to 25-year-old women for any number of purposes is too great a risk.

“Sacrificing our young women on the altar of political correctness is a clear dealbreaker, but the potential inclusion of race-driven, divisive ideological agendas gives further reason to oppose the bill in its current form. Sadly, the House-passed version of the NDAA diverts from mission-critical defense objectives to fund this nonsense. The Senate must say no.

“We reject the shameful fallacy that Congress must rubber stamp the social experimentation of our military to secure critical funding for our troops and national defense. An NDAA that drafts our daughters and granddaughters is a non-starter, and we call on members of courage to oppose its advancement.”

Nance: Number of Child Brides Is a Global Atrocity

By | News and Events | No Comments

In her latest op-ed posted in Townhall, Concerned Women for America’s CEO and President Penny Nance, draws attention to the atrocity of child brides that affects more than 650 million girls worldwide.

From the article: “The effects on girls forced into marriage at such an early age are detrimental and impact their whole life: literacy, health, and overall well-being. Girls under the age of 15 are five times more likely to die in childbirth, and just as devastating, a child born to a child bride is 60% more likely to die in their first year of life.

“The United States must step forward and work to end the practice of child brides. We cannot ignore girls’ lives being ruined by being forced into a marriage when they should still be playing at recess. As women, we cannot remain blind to this reality. There are no simple answers, but there are some bottom line principles. U.S. aid to offending countries should be tied to reform … ”

By | South Dakota | No Comments

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” I Timothy 2:1-2

We are excited to launch our 2022 Encourage-A-Legislator (EAL) program! For those who have not participated in our EAL program in the past, it focuses solely on prayer and encouragement for our state legislators. The EAL program is one of Concerned Women for America (CWA) of South Dakota’s most valued programs.

Though CWA members and friends regularly contact their legislators and pray concerning our core issues the EAL program is designed to pray for and encourage the legislators with no mention of legislation or policy. Regardless of whether legislators are conservative, liberal, Republican, Democrat, Independent, Christian, or non-Christian, they need both our prayer and encouragement.

For more information about the EAL program click here. Please print and distribute to others who might want to participate in our program.
