Thank You for a Successful 19th Annual Day at The Capitol

By | North Carolina | No Comments

Last Wednesday, we had an amazing turnout for our 19th Annual Day at the Capitol in Raleigh. We had over 100 attendees participate in our lobbying efforts to override the veto of SB 359, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.  NC Values Coalition joined with us again this year for our legislative briefing, lobbying efforts, chapel time, and observance of a session of the State House of Representatives.

We were grateful to have abortion survivors, Gianna Jessen and Claire Culwell, join us when we lobbied legislators on SB 359.  You can watch North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore’s (R- Cleveland) press conference with Gianna and Claire here.

We also had the joy of presenting former North Carolina State Rep. Bill Brawley (R-Mecklenburg) with an engraved tray recognizing him as an honorary member of Concerned Women for America (CWA) of North Carolina. CWA of North Carolina worked with former Rep. Brawley for several years on human trafficking legislation he sponsored. We greatly appreciate his work on the issue and his friendship with CWA of North Carolina.

Sadly, despite the heart-wrenching appeals and prayers, the efforts to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of SB 359 in the House came up short.  Though the North Carolina lawmakers voted 67 to 53 in favor of overriding the veto, it failed to reach the three-fifths approval required to do so. The North Carolina Senate approved the override several weeks ago.

CWA of North Carolina would like to thank the following legislators:

  1. Speaker Moore for his resolute effort to garner the three-fifths vote necessary for the veto override.
  2. House members who voted in favor of the veto override, including House Democrats Charles Graham (Robeson) and Garland E. Pierce (Hoke, Scotland), who bravely voted against their caucus in favor of the override.
  3. Senate members who voted in favor of the veto override early in the session, including Democrat Senator Don Davis (Greene, Pitt) who also bravely voted against his caucus in late April in favor of the override.

Lastly, we want to thank each of you who joined us in Raleigh, as well as those who were praying with us from home. We continue to ask for your prayers and ask that you take the following action.

Take Action:
(When talking to legislators’ offices, be sure to let them know that you are a member of Concerned Women for America of North Carolina.)

  1. Contact House Speaker Tim Moore and thank him for his efforts to override the veto. Also, urge the Speaker to call for another override vote before the session adjourns for the year on June 30.  704-739-1221/[email protected].
  2. Contact your state representative to thank him/her for voting in favor of the veto override, or to express disappointment if he/she voted against the veto override. Click here to locate your representative. Click here to see how your representative voted.
  3. Contact the three Democrats below who voted for the veto override and thank them for their brave vote.

Continue to pray fervently, “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, ‘With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.’” Matthew 19:26

Save Our Children Rally and Noise Ordinance Update

By | North Carolina | No Comments

Rally for Life: Save Our Children
Concerned Women for America (CWA) of North Carolina encourages our members and friends to attend the Save Our Children rally this Saturday, June 15, from 10:00 a.m. –  Noon in Charlotte. This pro-life event is in response to the proposed noise buffer ordinance (see article below) and the opening of Planned Parenthood’s new mega-clinic in Charlotte. Read about the new abortion facility here.

Let’s send a strong message to the Charlotte City Council and Planned Parenthood that the city of Charlotte supports life! This very important pro-life rally is hosted by the Douglass Leadership Institute, Black and Brown Coalition, and COGIC Family Life Initiative.

Please plan to attend and be sure to invite your friends!

Event details:
Date: Saturday, June 15, 2019
Time: 10:00 a.m. – Noon
Location: Cherry Park, 1509 Baxter Street, Charlotte, NC 28204
For more information: contact Rev. Kevrick McKain at 919-935-9220

Update on Charlotte’s Noise Ordinance
As I previously wrote, the Charlotte City Council is seeking to implement a new noise buffer ordinance at the “A Preferred Women’s Health” abortion clinic on Latrobe Drive. Should this ordinance be passed, it would silence the pro-life voices of the Love Life ministry or any other pro-life groups who wish to pray in front of the clinic.

This past Monday, a large and diverse group gathered at the Charlotte City Council meeting to speak out in opposition to the proposed ordinance. A vote on the ordinance is scheduled for Monday, June 24.

Take Action: Help stop the proposed sound ordinance by contacting the Charlotte City Council.

1. Please call and email the city council members to voice your opposition to this proposed unconstitutional ordinance. Tell them no further restrictions are needed on sound ordinances and to vote NO on this issue. The names of the council members and their respective contact information are listed below. Be polite but firm and communicate clearly.

Protect Babies Born Alive in NC: Help Us Override the Veto!

By | North Carolina | No Comments

Last month, our state legislators passed SB359, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, only to have it vetoed by Gov. Roy Cooper (Democrat) on April 18. In response to the veto, pro-life leaders from around the state, including myself, spoke at a press conference in Raleigh this week urging legislators to set aside politics and have compassion on babies surviving a horrific abortion – allowing these babies to be cared for instead of being set aside to die on a tray.

Thankfully, on Wednesday, April 30, the State Senate voted in favor of a veto override by a vote of 30 – 20, right along party lines, except for one courageous Democrat, Sen. Don Davis (D-Greene) who voted to support the override. The State House will vote to override the veto next, but at this time there is no date for the vote scheduled. Like the Senate, the House needs to reach a 3/5ths majority vote to override the Governor’s veto.

Please PRAY!
Pray for the hearts and minds of those who have been opposing the protection of innocent little babies.

Take Action! Please make a few quick calls!

  • Call Sen. Don Davis (D-Greene) at 919-715-8363 and thank him for his courageous conviction to vote against his Party in favor of the override.
  • Call your state representative and respectfully urge him/her to vote in favor of life by voting “Yes” to override Gov. Cooper’s veto of SB359. Click here to find out who your representative is and how to contact him/her.

On the national front: CWA of North Carolina joined other pro-life organizations in signing onto a promise letter urging the candidates running for Congress in North Carolina’s third and ninth districts, to pledge public support to sign the discharge petition for the federal Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (H.R. 962) upon being elected to Congress.

Thank you for being a voice in North Carolina for those who have no voice.

Calls Needed Today to Stop the Con-Con Bill

By | North Carolina | No Comments

Dear Friend,
Proponents of a Convention of States, also called a Constitutional Convention, Article 5 Convention, or Con-Con, have been working overtime to gain legislative support for HB 390, the Application for Convention of Statesbill. You can read why this is a very bad idea in my previous alert.

HB 390 passed out of the House Regulatory Reform Committee and must be approved by the Rules Committee before it can go to the House floor for a vote. The vote could come up at any time.

Please contact the following people and urge them not to bring forward HB 390.

  1. Speaker of the House Tim Moore (R-Cleveland):                                           704-733-3451 [email protected]
  2. Chairman of Rules, Calendar and Operations Committee David Lewis (R-Harnett):                                                                                                           919-715-3015 [email protected]

Please contact the following members of the Rules Committee asking them to vote NO on HB390 should it come before them for a vote.

Please pray that this bill will be stopped, as our God-given freedoms and liberties are at stake.

Gov. Cooper Needs to Hear a Clear Strong Message on Behalf of the Unborn

By | North Carolina | No Comments

The past two weeks have been very intense for both our State House and Senate as pro-life citizens flooded the legislative building in Raleigh lobbying for strong pro-life legislative bills and attending hearings on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act SB359 and HB602.

Both the North Carolina House and Senate have passed the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act along partisan lines this week with four Democrats voting with Republicans.

Now it goes before Gov. Roy Cooper for approval or veto. He has ten days to either veto or sign this bill into law with an April 26 deadline. If he does nothing, it will automatically become law. According to a Charlotte Observer article, “If Cooper does veto the bill, Republicans will need some Democratic lawmakers to side with them to override the veto, since the Republican-led legislature lost its veto-proof supermajority in the 2018 elections.” Gov. Cooper needs to hear from you!

Many pro-life citizens across the state attended both the senate and house hearings in Raleigh along with a few pro-abortion people. Numerous citizens spoke in favor of compassionate care for babies who are born alive by abortion. While you and I cannot imagine anything justifiable for intentionally allowing a helpless baby to die only by a fate worse than surviving a cruel abortion, please note the despicable liberal rhetoric spewed by several Democrats, particularly Sen. Floyd McKissick (D-Durham) and Sen. Terry Van Duyn (D-Buncombe) who is also a candidate for North Carolina Lt. Governor. Sen. McKissick argued that laws against murder and infanticide already exist; yes, there are existing laws against murder, but there are no federal laws against infanticide.” And Sen. Van Duyn stated, “I want all of us to have safe and affordable healthcare rooted in science … and not based on lies concocted by extremist Republicans which is nothing but a political stunt without scientific merit.”

Sen. Dan Bishop (R-Mecklenburg) countered these statements by stating “Current law doesn’t address this because no one has ever contemplated the need to address it before. Because it seemed, under our shared ideals, obvious to all, that if someone were alive, there would be no thought of denying medical care to save their life.”

Sen. Joyce Krawiec (R-Forsyth), a primary sponsor of SB359, passionately responded, “A ‘right to an abortion’ should not translate to a right to a dead child no matter what. These infants are born, and they are live human beings. They are separate from their mother’s body, and they should not be treated as anything other than a live child. They should not be cast aside in a sterile tray or left to die on a metal table.”

Rep. Dr. Greg Murphy (R-Pitt), the only medical doctor serving in the state House, stated, “This bill just speaks to the mere fact that if a child is born alive, they’re alive. Their life is not to be taken, regardless of what was the anticipated desire at the beginning of the delivery. The child is alive.”

Immediate Action Needed
Please call Gov. Cooper at (919) 814-2000 and respectfully ask him to sign SB359, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. If time allows, please follow up your phone call with an email at https://governor.nc.gov/contact/contact-governor-cooper. Be sure to let him know that you are a member of Concerned Women for America of North Carolina.

Please pray that the Lord humbles Gov. Cooper, opens his eyes and draws him to Himself and that he would delight in doing the will of God.

“But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God” (1 Corinthians 1:27-29).

Are You an Encourager?

By | North Carolina | No Comments

Concerned Women for America (CWA) of North Carolina has just launched our annual Encourage-A-Legislator (EAL) project. This is one of our favorite projects as we look forward to sharing our prayers and words of encouragement with our state legislators, our North Carolina Council of State, our federal North Carolina Senators and Congressmen, as well as President and Mrs. Trump and Vice President and Mrs. Pence.

The EAL project truly embodies who and what CWA is. Prayer is, and always will be, CWA’s foundation as we petition our most holy God to enable us to be effective in thwarting the schemes of the enemy.

The EAL project impacts our officials in two ways. First and foremost, it ensures consistent prayer for each official. Second, it encourages and builds bridges with conservative officials as well as those who do not normally agree with us. As our humble and gracious prayers are offered on behalf of our officials, and they receive multiple encouragement cards, hearts are changed and encouraged.

Volunteers across North Carolina, representing CWA, will be mailing postcards to the elected officials named above during April, May, and June. Our goal is to plant a seed for God’s Kingdom and to reach the hearts of men and women serving the citizens of North Carolina.

We have been heartened by encouraging feedback we have received. One official shared that he kept one of the encouragement cards in his inside coat pocket and would pull it out when he needed an encouragement that someone was praying for him. We also noticed during a visit to the Capitol that an official had one of our CWA EAL postcards on the wall in his office.

Even if you do not want to send postcards, will you please pray? We know that “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12)

If you would be interested in participating in the EAL project, please contact me by email or by phone at 704-516-0820 letting me know of your interest. I will respond with additional details. We would be delighted to have you join us in praying over and writing to our elected officials.

The U.S. Constitution is Not the Problem

By | North Carolina | No Comments

HB 390, an application for Convention of States, is a very dangerous bill making its way through the North Carolina legislature. HB390 would put our U.S. Constitution in jeopardy by opening it up for amendments (changes) such as the repeal of the Second Amendment and/or abolishing the Electoral College.

Convention of States also called a Constitutional Convention, Article 5 Convention, Con Con, etc. is considered by some as the way to solve any government issue. They believe amending or rewriting our Constitution is the way to fix our government.

Please read Concerned Women for America’s (CWA) brochure The U.S. Constitution is Not the Problem! to understand this topic.

Talking points:

  • It is too risky to open our Constitution.  Too much national division, radical interest groups.
  • Limit power of the Federal government, fiscal restraint — all the goals the Con Con is trying to achieve are already listed in our Constitution.  It just needs to be obeyed.
  • Too much uncertainty as to how a Con Con would be conducted.
  • Delegates to a Con Con could set their own rules with a new ratification mode.
  • Who selects the delegates?  Would California get more than North Carolina?  Unknown.
  • Ideas already suggested for Con-Con consideration: abolish Electoral College, Repeal of Second Amendment, weakening of First Amendment, Equal Rights Amendment, a new constitution.

Bill Status: This week, the North Carolina House passed HB 390 out of committee. It is now in the Rules Committee.

Please take action!

  1. Contact Rules Committee Chair, David Lewis, and ask him to hold H390 in committee. E-mail: [email protected] Phone: (919) 715-3015
  2. Contact the members of the House Rules Committee and ask them to oppose HB 390. Consider using some of the talking points above. Be sure to let them know that you are a member of Concerned Women for America of North Carolina. When e-mailing, provide your name and address. Put a brief message in the subject line.
  3. Forward this email on to friends and encourage them to both pray and take action on this important topic.

Please pray that this bill will be stopped, as our God-given freedoms and liberties are at stake.
