Last month, HB 522 (formerly HB 695) Foreign Laws / Protect Constitutional Rights Bill passed the North Carolina Senate 31-2, and passed the House, 75-37! Click here to read the bill. Click here for summary, current law, analysis and background.

The Governor has 30 days to sign HB 522 into law, and with less than one week until the deadline of before midnight on August 25, you can be sure the Governor is hearing from the opposition! Here is a letter one of the representatives had received.

HB 522 author and primary sponsor, Rep. Chris Whitmire (District 113), wrote Concerned Women for America of North Carolina:

“The Council for American Islamic Relations, CAIR, and other groups continue to lobby the Governor not to sign HB 522, Foreign Laws / Protect Constitutional Rights Bill. Many of these oppositional groups have a history of ties to terrorist sympathizers and enablers. HB 522, when signed into law will prohibit the application of foreign laws (including Sharia Law), in American Courts which would violate a fundamental Constitutional right of individuals in the area of family law. Please continue to reach out to your members and colleagues and encourage them to express support to Governor McCrory to sign HB 522 into law.”

America is the most religiously tolerant nation in the world. Religions may worship in private or public without government intervention. In response to CAIR, Concerned Women for America will stand strong to defend the American Constitution as the highest law of the land (article VI of the U.S. Constitution). We will protect the Judeo-Christian values upon which our nation was founded. Sharia Law goes beyond religious liberties; Sharia violates individual’s constitutional rights. (See CWA Brochure: Sharia Law, A Threat to America as We Know it)

According to Rep. Whitmire, to date, over 50 cases in 23 states have appeared in U.S. courts with 27 of these cases infringing upon fundamental Constitutional rights. The vast majority of violations have egregiously impacted women.

Addressing the North Carolina General Assembly at a CWA of North Carolina Legislative Briefing, American Laws for American Courts, Penny Nance, CWA’s CEO and President said, “We view the issue of Sharia Law through the context of the ‘least of these’. We’ve got to make sure no matter who sets foot on our shores, that they are protected by our great laws.”

Six states have passed similar American Laws for American Courts type initiatives into law. Click here for more information.

Rep. Whitmire explains, “HB 522 follows legislation that is proven in other states. It protects our Constitutional rights, especially those of women and minorities; reinforces the Constitutional basis on which our free enterprise system was founded; and honors the order of law as made and defined in accordance with our U.S. & State Constitutions and not that of foreign lands.”

Action: This week, please call and e-mail Gov. Pat McCrory. You cannot call or e-mail too often. Ask him to sign into law, HB 522 Foreign Laws / Protect Constitutional Rights. Call the Office of the Governor at (919) 814-2000 or click here to e-mail him.

Pray: that God will grant wisdom to Gov. McCrory to sign HB 522 into law.

Your prayers and actions will make a difference for the principles of freedom ensuring that constitutional rights legislation is maintained in North Carolina, “the shining light on the hill” (Matthew 5:14).
