We are thrilled to celebrate multiple victories in the South Dakota Legislature last week! Concerned Women for America (CWA) of South Dakota was instrumental in helping secure each one.
Criminalize the Abortionist, Not the Abortive Woman
HB1212 would revise provisions in order to strengthen protections for unborn children. HB1212 would criminalize the woman for having an abortion. We opposed this bill as the pro-life community has never criminalized the abortive woman but rather criminalized the abortionist. One of CWA of South Dakota’s Legislative Liaisons, Lisa Gennaro, testified that HB1212 is the wrong tool to curb the scourge of abortion. We believe women need truth and compassion, and our pregnancy care centers provide both.
Position: Oppose
Status: HB1212 was heard in the House Health and Human Services Committee. Great news, it was sent to the 41st legislative day, essentially killing the bill! More on this bill here.
TAKE ACTION: No longer needed.
Conscience Protection for Healthcare Providers
HB1153 would protect certain rights of healthcare providers. HB1153 is a bill intended to shield health care professionals from penalties or coercion for refusing to provide medical care that conflicts with their conscience. Lisa testified in support of this bill.
