On Thursday, April 23, 2026, Concerned Women for America of Louisiana plans to testify before the House Health and Welfare Committee in support of HB948, authored by Rep. Beryl Amedee (R-District 51).
This proposed legislation affirms and strengthens parental rights regarding medical decisions for minors. Known as the “Parental Medical Decision Protection Act,” HB 948 seeks to establish clear protections ensuring that parents and guardians retain the primary authority over their children’s medical care.
Specifically, this bill:
- Affirms that parents/guardians have a fundamental right to make medical decisions for their children.
- Limits government entities, schools, or healthcare providers from overriding those decisions.
- Gives parents control over medical treatments, healthcare decisions, and consent for procedures involving their children.
- Will restrict third-party interference, limiting government agencies or institutions from bypassing parental consent, and will likely set stricter standards for when the state can intervene.
Parental rights are fundamental. This legislation raises the legal bar for challenges and potential overrides, as courts would typically require stronger justification to limit these rights. This protects family autonomy and prevents government overreach. However, this bill does not eliminate all state intervention. In cases of neglect or abuse, state intervention may still be required.
Take Action:
- Contact members of the House Health and Welfare Committee and ask them to support HB948. This simply ensures that parents are informed and involved in significant medical decisions. It’s time to avoid secrecy or conflicts between institutions and families. This is also consistent with other policies that limit government intervention in family matters. Make sure when you contact them that you let them know you are being updated by Concerned Women for America of Louisiana.
- Please share this with friends and family.
Pray:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the charge You give us in Your word to train up a child in the way he should go (Proverbs 22:6). Scripture clearly teaches that You give parents the responsibility to care for, raise, and educate their children. Give our legislators divine wisdom and courage to uphold family integrity and protect children. We pray for laws that empower parents and reject schemes that undermine their role. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
