House of Representatives Votes to Stop Taxpayer Funding of Abortion

WASHINGTON, D.C. –– Yesterday, the U. S. House of Representatives passed the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act introduced by Reps. Chris Smith (R-New Jersey) and Dan Lipinski (D-Illinois). This legislation would permanently prohibit American taxpayers from being forced to subsidize abortions as well as ensure that abortions will not be subsidized by the Affordable Care Act.

Penny Nance, CEO and President of Concerned Women for America, issued the following statement:

“This legislation is a comprehensive approach that eliminates the patchwork of current policies that are included annually on the spending bills. It simply ensures that Americans, many of them opposed on moral or religious grounds to abortion, are not forced to subsidize abortion with their tax dollars.

“This legislation is good for women and families. When polled, a majority of Americans, whether referring to themselves as ‘pro-choice’ or ‘pro-life,’ said that they oppose federal funds going toward abortion.

“The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act does what President Obama promised Americans in 2009; it ensures that the Affordable Care Act cannot circumvent the Hyde Amendment to include abortion coverage as part of the benefits package.”
