I want to talk about cliffs, but not the fiscal cliff that continues to dominate the news cycles on television. We are talking about “We the People” choosing to promote homosexual behavior through government for future generations.
This was by far the worst outcome of last night’s election result, the defeat of four efforts in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington to protect God’s model for marriage.
In Maine, Question 1 asked: “Do you want to allow the State of Maine to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples?” The vote was 53 percent in favor and 47 percent against.
In Maryland, Question 6 sought to overturn an effort by the state legislature to allow same-sex “marriages” in the state. Supporters of Biblical marriage lost 52 to 48 percent.
In Minnesota, Amendment 1sought to protect God’s model for marriage by adding this to the state constitution: “Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota.” The vote was also 52 to 48 percent against it.
And in Washington, Referendum 74 was also defeated by the same margin (52-48 percent), opening the door to same-sex “marriage” in the Evergreen State.
So now, for the first time, we have voters electing for themselves (not judges or legislatures) to redefine marriage and allow homosexuals to “marry.” It was bound to happen sooner or later. Homosexual activists have mounted a decades-long campaign of aggressive intimidation that has made an example of targeted individuals in order to send a clear message to anyone who would dare to oppose them publicly.
In Maryland, we saw the disgraceful suspension of Prof. Angela McCaskill, the chief diversity officer at Gallaudet University, for her support of the petition that put Question 6 on the ballot this election. In Maine, swastikas were painted on the building of Stockton Springs Community Church. In Washington, campaign signs were vandalized and destroyed, and supporters were physically attacked.
Sadly, the intimidation tactics worked, which will only fuel more of these types of scare tactics in the future.
These votes are significant not because they represent a philosophical shift of the acceptance of same-sex “marriage,” as many have wrongly concluded, but because they represent a strong and very real fatigue factor settling in on a substantial part of the population when it comes to this issue. Many have lost the appetite to fight this battle and have chosen to move on to “more pressing matters.”
This is a big mistake that will have dire consequences for us, our children, and our children’s children. God’s definition of marriage as one man and one woman is not an arbitrary designation without any concrete earthly significance. There is a reason why the social science data confirm that God’s model for marriage, one man and one woman, is by far the best environment in which to raise children.
The mother-father-child bond’s stability and endurance is unparalleled, and a government shift away from that ideal will only multiply and accelerate the many moral and societal ills plaguing our children today. The statistics on the consequences of fatherlessness, for example, are simply devastating.
So we must not buy into this apparent trend to focus on “more important things.” This election season, the “more important thing” of choice was the economy. But the fact is that the traditional family is a major building block of a strong economy. Any plan to strengthen the economy that does not include a strengthening of the American family is bound to fail and fail miserably.
Even if it could be done, what good is it for us to be economically prosperous if we are morally and spiritually bankrupt as a nation?
No. Do not buy into the lies. We must protect marriage and families, or we will continue on the same downward spiral we have been circling down for the last thirty years. It is up to you and me. Let us not grow weary in well doing (Galatians 6:9), but let us stand strong time and time again for God and His principles. The battle is certainly not over yet.
