An internet video of 7-year-old girls dancing to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” during a dance competition stirred national debate asking “what were the parents thinking?” From the sexual moves to the skimpy, lingerie-like outfits, the video was criticized by conservatives and liberals alike – yet defended by parents and the dance instructor. The YouTube posting of the dance received a flood of comments, including a few very lewd and vulgar ones written by pedophiles. While YouTube has pulled the video, it is still easily accessible online. Laurie Higgins, Director of School Advocacy for the Illinois Family Institute, says this video raises many issues parents need to be aware of, from the impact of the culture that is sexualizing young children, to the dangers of posting such videos of children on a public forum.
