WASHINGTON, DC – Concerned Women for America CEO and President Penny Nance issued a statement on the passing of Gloria Steinem.
“We are praying for Gloria’s family and friends. She was an icon to many women, remarkable in many ways by championing women’s rights. We appreciate her work to fight discrimination against women in the workplace and for equal pay. Gloria and CWA Founder Beverly LaHaye, though completely different in their worldviews, contemporaneously blazed a trail for women to stand on the national stage of public policy.
“Gloria’s beliefs and CWA’s greatly differed on pro-life and pro-marriage issues, with Gloria tragically misleading women into believing that their unique capacity to grow unborn life is something to be feared, not celebrated. Gloria herself admitted to having one abortion, and it is sad that she leaves no direct descendants who could have carried on her legacy. Her view of marriage, in a phrase she popularized: ‘A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle,’ was certainly misguided, and one she obviously changed her mind on since she married later in her life.
“Correctly, Gloria fought for women to be seen and recognized for their unique qualities and contributions as women. Today we are going in a completely different direction in which the unique dignity of women is being cast aside in favor of men and of gender identity politics. We are seeing this most recently in the California ruling against women’s sports.
“We hope that women today will embrace the unique dignity of womanhood, defend unborn children, and celebrate families.”
