Conservatives Must Provide Bold, Steady Leadership on Life
Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA) released the following statement after inquiries for comments by the media on some candidates’ concerns after the Alabama Supreme Court IVF ruling:
“Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Tom Parker went through great lengths in his concurring opinion to explain that there is nothing incompatible with Alabama’s strong respect for life and the practice of IVF,” said Penny Nance, CEO and President of Concerned Women for America, the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization. “He discusses, for instance, that ‘many other Westernized countries have adopted IVF practices or regulations that allow IVF to continue while drastically reducing the chances of embryos being killed.’ In Australia and New Zealand, for example, the prevailing ethical standards require physicians to usually make only one embryo at a time.
“The policy debate on the best practices for IVF can certainly continue, but even in that debate, Alabama’s respect for the sanctity of every human life as created in the image of God represents the best framework possible to engage it. Pro-life Republican Senate candidates should take this case as an opportunity to discuss how precious life is from the moment of conception. Running from this issue, like abortion, only allows the other side to use scare tactics and false messaging that wrongly defines our position.” e
