CWALAC Says Congress Must Ensure Only Biological Women Can Be Members of the Daughters of the American Revolution

WASHINGTON, DC – Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee (CWALAC) commended Rep. Ben Cline (R-VA) for introducing the “Daughters of the American Revolution Membership Integrity Act,” which will require the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) to have biological women members only. DAR was chartered by Congress.

“Rep. Cline is justly standing for fairness for biological females by restoring their rights, not sons pretending to be daughters, to be in the DAR. Ironically, membership in the DAR requires biological proof that members are related to a soldier from the American Revolution, but the DAR denies biological realities between women and men. This madness must end,” said Penny Nance, CEO and President, Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee.

The DAR was founded in 1890 by a group of women who wanted to express their patriotism, but they were excluded from the Sons of the American Revolution, which had been founded a year earlier.  In July 2023, the DAR sneakily introduced a “non-discrimination” bylaw amendment at the 132nd Continental Congress. Later that year, the President General at that time, Pamela Wright, said in a statement that transgender women can join DAR, and that they’ve always been allowed to, as long as their birth certificate says “female,” which can be changed. Several DAR chapters have submitted proposals to amend their bylaws to define a woman, but they’ve all been rejected. A group of DAR women has even broken off to create their own 501 (c) (3) nonprofit called Daughters Advocating for Restoration.

“DAR women will hopefully soon get the justice they deserve, and we urge Congress to pass the Daughters of the American Revolution Membership Integrity Act. It is more important than ever that organizations and institutions, especially those chartered by the federal government, stop denying biological reality and ensure fairness for biological women,” Nance said.
