WASHINGTON, DC – A Zogby Analytics poll* commissioned by Concerned Women for America (CWA) found that a majority of U.S. parents want TV content ratings to advise them of violence, sexual content, or other sensitive themes like LGBTQ messaging or characters, in children’s TV programming.

The poll questions are as follows:

“How important is it for children’s programs to include content labels to advise parents of the presence of content they might want to avoid — such as violence, sexual content, or other sensitive themes like LGBTQ messaging or characters — so parents can make informed choices?” 87.1% of respondents said either “very important” or “somewhat important.”

“Do you think the current television and streaming ratings system is too controlled by the entertainment industry, or does it fairly represent the views of parents and the public?” 40.9% of respondents said “too controlled by the entertainment industry.”

“Would you support or oppose reforming the ratings oversight system to include more independent experts, parent groups, and child-advocacy organizations?” 79.5% of respondents said either “strongly support” or “somewhat support.”

“As the FCC decides if the TV content ratings system needs to alert parents to sensitive content in children’s TV programs, our poll data shows that parents overwhelmingly want to be informed. Parents should be able to make informed viewing decisions for their children, but currently, parents have no way of knowing whether LGBTQ+ content is in that program. It’s time to give parents that choice,” said Penny Nance, CEO and President, Concerned Women for America.

“We also believe the TV Parental Guidelines Oversight Monitoring Board, which has oversight over the TV content ratings system, must include more parent groups, child advocacy organizations, and independent experts, and fewer industry-aligned stakeholders. How does it make sense that the oversight board is dominated not by parents, but by the industry whose bad behavior necessitated the creation of the ratings system in the first place? Parents deserve to have their voices heard,” she said.

A CWA analysis of Netflix programming rated appropriate for children revealed that 41% of G-rated series and 41% of TV-Y7-rated series contain LGBTQ+ content.

The FCC has sought public comment on whether and how the TV Parental Guidelines age-rating system and the Television Oversight Monitoring Board can be improved to better empower parents in today’s viewing environment, including streaming and on-demand platforms. CWA urged parents to submit an FCC comment explaining why TV programs should alert parents to LGBTQ+ content, especially in shows targeted to children.

*The Zogby Analytics poll was an online survey of parents aged 21-55 with a child or children under 18 at home and conducted between 6/5/26 – 6/9/26. Margin of error is +/- 3.1 percentage points.
