SCOTUS Should Put Women’s Health Above Politics in Abortion Pill Case

FDA’s reckless approval of do-it-yourself abortions under scrutiny

Washington, D.C. – Today, Concerned Women for America (CWA) urged the U.S. Supreme Court to put women’s health above politics as it hears arguments on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine case over the use and distribution of Mifepristone, the dangerous chemical abortion drug. The plaintiffs in this case, the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine and other groups of doctors and national medical associations oppose the removal of safety precautions about this drug.

CWA has weighed in on the case and the FDA decision to rush approval of the abortion drug for political purposes putting an untold number of women at risk because the FDA decided to lower the standards of care to promote abortion to an ever-increasing number of women. In 2021, in violation of federal law, the FDA approved sending Mifepristone through the mail.

“Concerned Women for America (CWA) has been fighting for women’s health and safety and against the FDA for many years,” said Penny Nance, CEO and President of CWA, the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization, “We have urged the courts to hold the FDA to the high standards of care required by law. Bowing to political pressure, the FDA did not uphold its own directives in this drug.

“As other courts have done, the U.S. Supreme Court should direct the FDA to go through the full process of ensuring the safety of women using these powerful abortion drugs before it releases and significantly expands their availability to the public. It should be required to conduct proper trials instead of shifting the testing burden to pregnant women all across our nation by misusing emergency procedures that will put women’s health at risk.

“Let’s be clear; there is nothing safe or effective about allowing people to perform their own DIY abortion. Approval of this drug would allow anyone anywhere to have an abortion without any in-person medical supervision, reliable in-person safeguards and checks, and without a routine medical examination.”
