Washington, D.C. — This afternoon the Senate voted 57-42 to confirm Mike Pompeo as the 70th U.S. Secretary of State.

Penny Nance, CEO and President of Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee, issued the following statement in response:

“Today, 42 Senate Democrats put party over country by voting against Mike Pompeo’s confirmation. It is a shame, because Pompeo will serve the U.S. well as Secretary of State and has a proven record of service to our nation as a veteran of the U.S. Army, a congressman from Kansas, and Director of the CIA. Not only does Pompeo have President Trump’s trust and respect, his qualifications are undeniable.

“The Secretary of State is a crucial position, and Pompeo will represent the nation well on the world stage. The State Department is notorious for failing to support international religious liberty and for pushing a pro-abortion agenda on developing nations, but I have confidence in Pompeo to bring the State Department in line with the policies of the Trump Administration.

“I have had the honor of working with Mr. Pompeo on many occasions, and I am confident that his vast experience across all levels of government makes him an excellent representative of the United States. I believe Mr. Pompeo will bring pragmatic yet firm and decisive leadership to U.S. foreign relations, such as our pressing political and economic challenges with North Korea, Iran, Russia, and China.

“Mr. Pompeo will put America’s interests first and bring desperately needed leadership to the State Department. We look forward to working with him to implement the Administration’s policies to advance international religious liberty, support life, and preserve our national sovereignty.”
