Where does liberty come from? Think slowly and carefully about it. The answer has far-reaching implications for our relationship to government.
There is a quote inscribed on the wall at the Jefferson Memorial here in Washington, D.C., that always stirs my heart and helps me reflect on the issue. Thomas Jefferson said:
God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?
He went on:
Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever.
There is the key to America’s freedom and liberty — and it is the gift of God!
