January 24, 2025, was a good day for life in the United States. Not only did President Donald J. Trump send a message of support to all of those in D.C. for the March for Life, but Vice President J.D. Vance was there in person to deliver his remarks. President Trump also signed an executive order “Enforcing the Hyde Amendment.”
The Hyde Amendment was introduced in Congress in 1976 by Rep. Henry J. Hyde (R- Illinois) and was passed. Every fiscal year, beginning in 1977, the Hyde Amendment has been applied to annual appropriations for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education. It is a funding restriction that restricts federal funds from being used to pay for an abortion (with a few exceptions). Every U.S. President from 1977 forward- both Republican and Democrat- has adhered to the restrictions set forth by the Hyde Amendment … until President Joe Biden.
President Biden signed two Executive Orders, Executive Order 14076 and Executive Order 14079, in 2022 which were both used to circumvent the intent of the Hyde Amendment. Executive Order 14076 was President Biden’s response to the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. He made this statement:
In the face of this health crisis, the Federal Government is taking action to protect healthcare service delivery and promote access to critical reproductive healthcare services, including abortion. It remains the policy of my Administration to support women’s right to choose and to protect and defend reproductive rights. Doing so is essential to justice, equality, and our health, safety, and progress as a Nation.
Yes, you read that correctly. The President of the United States called the people of every state having a voice in whether or not abortion is allowed in their state a “health crisis.” A few months later with Executive Order 14079, he made this statement:
As it remains the policy of my Administration to support women’s access to reproductive healthcare services, including their ability to travel to seek abortion care in States where it is legal, I am directing my Administration to take further action to protect access to reproductive healthcare services and to address the crisis facing women’s health and public health more broadly.
Never mind that President Biden supported Hyde for decades; as president, he became radically pro-abortion, placating the most extreme members of the Left. Those two orders, along with his budgets, provided loopholes for taxpayer monies to be used to fund abortions. President Trump’s Executive Order specifically revokes both of Biden’s orders and returns the Hyde amendment to its original congressional intent. No more loopholes for American tax dollars to be spent funding abortions here in the United States.
Let’s not forget that, just one day after President Trump pardoned pro-life activists who were unjustly targeted using the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, he also signed a Presidential Memorandum reinstating the Mexico City Policy that will stop our federal tax dollars being used for abortions overseas. A good day for life, and a good day for Americans (nearly six in ten oppose tax dollars being used for abortion) as we see our current President keeping the campaign promises he made to the American citizens. No more U.S. taxpayer money funding abortions on or off U.S. soil. Thank you, Mr. President!
