Support School Library Transparency in New Mexico – Action Needed!

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,
who gives generously to all without reproach,
and it will be given to him.”
– James 1:5

We need your immediate prayers and action to support school libraries with greater transparency for parents. SB49, the SAFE Act, will do just that and is now awaiting a hearing in the New Mexico Senate Education Committee.

What SB49 Does

SB49 protects our children. SB49 establishes a pilot program allowing school districts to develop their own book-rating standards and apply them to one elementary, one middle, and one high school. It provides parents with greater transparency into library content and equips districts with tools to inform them through a rating and feedback system.

What SB49 Does Not Do

This bill does not remove books from school libraries or impose statewide censorship. Instead, it empowers parents with information to make informed decisions for their children.

Transparency builds trust between schools and families, and SB49 is a reasonable step in that direction.

We will keep you updated when the SAFE Act is heard in the Senate Education Committee.

Take Action:

Please contact the Senate Education Committee and respectfully urge the committee members to VOTE YES on SB49. When reaching out, be sure to let them know that Concerned Women for America of New Mexico is keeping you updated on this bill and has encouraged you to engage on this issue.

Suggested Message Points

  • SB49 promotes parental transparency, not book removal.
  • Parents deserve clear information on library content.
  • Local districts, not the state, set their own standards.

Pro-tips:

  • Be concise and respectful. A short email can be more effective than a long one.
  • We need to be strategic in how we speak about the bill. Sexual content is obviously an issue, but do not forget to also focus on the drug, violence, and self-harm content that is prevalent.

Pray:

Heavenly Father,
You are the source of wisdom and truth. We pray for the members of the Senate Education Committee as they consider SB49. Provide them with the discernment to support transparency and parental engagement in our schools. Bless our children with safe and thoughtful learning environments and guide parents in wisdom as they nurture and protect their families.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thank you for standing with us — your voice matters in shaping the future of New Mexico’s schools.
