Soon after learning that the U.S. Navy planned to allow military facilities to be used for same-sex “marriage” ceremonies and allow its chaplains to perform them, Rep. Todd Akin (R- Missouri) drafted a letter to Navy Chief of Chaplains Rear Adm. Mark L. Tidd stating that the Navy’s plan violates federal law as set out in the Defense of Marriage Act. Congressman Akin followed up by offering an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill restating that as federal property, U.S. Navy facilities and personnel can not be used for same-sex “marriages.” Rep.
