WASHINGTON, DC – In a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) comment, Concerned Women for America (CWA) said that “gender-affirming care (GAC) is not healthcare,” and applauded the FTC action to protect consumers from the deceptive practices of GAC, urging swift and decisive action to protect those suffering from gender dysphoria.
“The FTC is right to investigate the harms of so-called ‘gender-affirming care,’ especially concerning children. CWA for years has been sounding the alarm about the deception and harm of social and medical ‘gender transition,’ as many have been deceived by the medical community that took advantage of them under the veil of gender-affirming care. Now the FTC must act swiftly to protect anyone suffering from gender dysphoria. We need to stop placating both children and adults with lies, drugs, or scalpels,” said Penny Nance, CEO and President, Concerned Women for America.
CWA stated in the FTC comment that, “So-called GAC that aims to recreate the physical body to conform to a self-derived identity which rejects a person’s natal sex is not treatment to maintain or restore the health of the body or mind. It is, on its face, a deceptive medical practice that deconstructs and damages the body and mind.
“Despite its claims, GAC does not and cannot change a person’s sex. Affirming a ‘gender’ that is incongruent with a person’s natal sex through clinical, social, chemical, surgical, or pharmaceutical tactics are deceptive practices founded on fantasy, not reality. GAC practitioners perpetuate this fantasy and profit from promoting an ideology that is detrimental to a person’s health. It is a lucrative practice to make patients dependent on hormonal drugs and costly surgical treatments designed to perpetuate a dysphoria. Medical commerce profits from the perpetuation of affirming this false identity – interventions may placate distress for a time but do nothing to remedy the root of gender dysphoria.
“It is widely known and well-documented that the aggressive GAC industry has been dominated, controlled, and driven by an activist class within medical professional organizations, among them the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, and the America Psychological Association, coupled with the complicit abdication of responsibility by administrators and practitioners, and the self-seeking power and profit motives of medical providers and the pharmaceutical industry. The staggering rise in demand and harm to youth and families caught in their web of deception should come as no surprise.
“Gender dysphoric youth and adults require the care and compassion of health care professionals who should be committed to the Hippocratic oath to do no harm.”
