In the middle of all the election activities – phone banking, door-to-door knocking, e-mailing friends, etc. – it’s easy to lose perspective. But let’s all take thirty seconds to look at this. A 15-year-old Pakistani girl was murdered by her parents in an “honor killing.” Why? Was she caught in an uncompromising position with her boyfriend? Did she try to dress like a westerner? Did she add the wrong fellow to her Facebook? No. Her crime was “looking.” She looked at a boy – whom she did not know – as he rode by on a motorcycle. And she died as a result.
Mom and Dad, apparently strident followers of Pres. Obama’s “religion of peace,” told a British broadcaster that “She said, ‘I didn’t do it on purpose. I won’t look again.'” But Mommy Dearest had already thrown the acid. “It was her destiny to die this way.”
THROWN THE ACID?!?!?!?! Pakistanis keep acid on hand for just such an occasion??? Oh wait. Big sister had, according to the parents, already dishonored the family. The article doesn’t say what happened to her, but apparently Mom and Dad weren’t putting up with it again.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan says that nearly 1,000 women (a conservative number, to be sure) were killed in honor killings last year – some of them over property disputes.
I, for one, am sick and tired of little girls being shot and acid burned, while here in America, some three-quarters of the 60 million evangelical women just can’t find the gumption to get off their duffs and vote. I mean, you have GOT to be kidding me! Vote, ladies! You can! Some women can’t – and some won’t live long enough to even if they could.
