CWALAC Supports Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. –– Today, the United States Senate, led by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), is set to introduce the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. Penny Nance, CEO and President of Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee (CWALAC), the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization, says in the brief statement below that the act protects women and limits abortion after five months, when babies can feel pain:

“Scientific research and advancing technology brings to light the inhumane treatment of babies in the womb, who after 20 weeks (about five months gestation) can feel pain. Responding to stimuli and requiring anesthesia for fetal surgery, babies at 20 weeks can feel pain, acknowledge their mother’s voice, hiccup, and grow hair.

“It is time that the law reflects our society’s desire to protect the innocent. Introducing this bill, already passed by the House, is step one in allowing a fair debate in the deliberative body on the issue of late-term abortion in this country.

“As polling by Quinnipiac, National Journal, Huffington Post, NBC/Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post/ABC News reveal, a majority of Americans support limiting abortion after 20 weeks. Sixty percent of women think abortion after 20 weeks should be illegal (53 percent of men agree).

“The Senate has the opportunity to speak for those who can’t speak for themselves and protect the health of women. While all abortions pose physical and psychological risks for the woman, medical risks from abortion increase markedly as pregnancy progresses, including the risk of death.

“Concerned Women for America ran a focus group of women and found that the majority of those diverse women were for ‘commonsense regulation’ like banning late-term abortion. It is only those who continue to place politics and so-called ‘progress’ above the health of women who are against defending these babies who flinch away from the devices used to terminate their lives — babies who should get the same protection under our constitutionally granted rights of ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.'”
