Washington D.C. -The North Dakota legislature passed HB1305, a bill that bans gender selection abortions and abortions due to genetic abnormalities like Down syndrome. Expected to be signed by North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple, HB1305 will make North Dakota the first state to specifically protect the lives of unborn children with conditions like Down syndrome.
Concerned Women for America applauds the life affirming votes in North Dakota and has issued the following statement from CEO and President Penny Nance:
“House Bill 1305 would make it a Class A misdemeanor for a physician to willingly perform an abortion based specifically on gender or on genetic abnormalities. We have all experienced diversity and how children with special needs bring innocence and joy to a busy, judgmental world. As women we applaud the protection of the unborn from discrimination based on genetic abnormalities and gender in the womb in North Dakota. This law specifically protects women, as we know that women are disproportionately targeted for abortion here in the United States and abroad. There are already 160 million baby girls missing from this world due to targeted sex-selection abortion.
We as Americans are protected from discrimination in housing, education, and employment but have failed to protect our citizens in the womb from discrimination based on gender and genetic abnormality. We will continue to encourage our North Dakota members and wonderful women warriors like Rep. Bette Grande to continue in this larger battle for life. Science and history are hard to deny, and the North Dakota Legislature looked both in the face and realized the importance of protecting unborn citizens from discrimination and early death.”
