Washington D.C. — Penny Nance, CEO and President of Concerned Women for America (CWA), has issued the following statement in light of North Carolina’s passage of a constitutional amendment in support of traditional marriage, banning “gay marriage”:
“We commend the voters of North Carolina for standing up for traditional marriage — defining it the way God and thousands of years of experience has taught us — as the union between one man and one woman. Concerned Women for America believes traditional marriage and families are the backbone of our society and must be protected. Our country is strong when our children are raised in an environment with both a mother and a father who love each other, and their children, unconditionally.”
Mary Frances Forrester, Associate Director for CWA of North Carolina and wife of late-State Senator James Forrester, whose tireless efforts gave birth to the amendment, had this to say on the amazing victory:
“We did it! It’s good news, and I know Jim is happy tonight, too. We’ve just said something really powerful to the state and to the nation. God answered our prayers, and so I am really grateful to all who united with us in prayer and support for our efforts to defend traditional marriage.”
With this overwhelming victory in North Carolina, it’s troubling to see President Obama’s “evolving” views on “gay marriage.” In 2004, then-Senator Barack Obama (D-Illinois) made it clear that his faith led him to believe, “that a man and a woman, when they get married, are performing something before God, and it’s not simply the two persons who are meeting.” He said that “traditional marriage expresses a community’s concern and regard for a particular institution.”
We agree. The problem is, however, that although the president said all the right things back then, he has not governed that way. CWA has called him out on his many actions against traditional marriage and the news that he is “evolving” on the issue.
CWA and other faith-based organizations have gone out of our way to make it clear that our support for traditional marriage is based on our sincerely held religious belief, and that God’s model for marriage and families is best. We’re glad the people of North Carolina agree, and we hope the president continues to share that same view.
