In August Gov. Nathan Deal punted responsibility of the Common Core standards over to the State Board of Education (SBOE) and ordered the Board to review the Common Core national guidelines. In addition, Gov. Deal asked the Board to “formally un-adopt” a part of the Common Core that includes sample English text selections (Appendix B).
The State Board of Education is meeting Thursday, November 7, 2013, and we need as many people as possible to attend the meeting. This is the Board’s final meeting before the Georgia legislative session begins in January, and we must send a strong message that Georgians want to be back in the driver’s seat when it comes to controlling our education standards, testing and student data-collection.
In 2010, the SBOE signed off on the Race to the Top grant that shackled Georgia to the Common Core initiative. We must tell this Board that the Common Core is failing Georgia children. Let’s do it together on November 7.
Meeting time: 8:00 a.m.
Location: Georgia Department of Education, 2070 Twin Towers East, 205 Jesse Hill Jr. Drive, Atlanta GA 30334
Parking>: There is a parking garage connected to the Twin Towers
If you cannot attend the meeting will you please contact SBOE Chair Barbara Hampton by phone (404) 657-7410 or e-mail (bahampton@doe.k12.ga.us). Please tell Mrs. Hampton that Georgians will not accept untested, unpiloted, cookie-cutter off-the-shelf standards. Tell her Georgia traded down when we became shackled to the Common Core. Georgia students and parents deserve better.
Thank you for making a difference. Our children and grandchildren are depending on you to be their voice.
