Washington, D.C. – The abortion drug RU-486 has claimed two more women’s lives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported this week on the deaths of a 29 year old in 2008 and a 21 year old in 2009. This week marks the tenth anniversary of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of RU-486.
Concerned Women for America’s president Wendy Wright stated:
“Nine women have died in less than ten years since the drug hit the market. Many more have very likely died or suffered serious unreported complications. The process of detecting and testing can be difficult, and families and doctors may be reluctant to report casualties from abortion.
“The FDA approved RU-486 without adequate trials and under intense political pressure from abortion groups and politicians. In a tragic case of ‘ideology trumping science,’ the FDA neglected its mission to ensure drugs are safe. Instead, the FDA has adopted a view that death is preferable to pregnancy and abortion a priority over women’s health and safety.
“This week the FDA released a dire warning to stop using infant sleep positioners because 12 infants died in 13 years. RU-486 has caused at least 9 deaths in less than 10 years. According to the FDA’s standards, it needs to warn people not to use RU-486. No respectable doctor would use RU-486.”
“Congress investigated the FDA’s rogue approval of RU-486 in 2006 and found the agency committed numerous violations. Yet the agency ignored the criticism and this year duplicated its errors by approving, based on shoddy trials, ‘ella,’ a drug similar to RU-486. It once again revealed its low view of women — that women are collateral damage in the quest to eliminate unborn babies.”
