Swath of R-rated Movies to Hit Disney, Further Tarnishing “Family Friendly” Image

WASHINGTON, DC – Concerned Women for America (CWA) is warning parents that Disney+ will bring on an overwhelming increase of R-rated movies and TV-MA-rated TV shows as Hulu is integrated into the Disney streaming platform, reportedly to happen in early February.

CWA research reveals that Disney+ will go from having 19 R-rated movies, to having over 439 R-rated movies — a more than 2,200% increaseand from 45 TV-MA (mature audiences only) series to 425 TV-MA rated series, a more than 840% increase. It will also, presumably, bring over its first NC-17 title (which the MPAA now uses in place of the “X” rating), Blue is the Warmest Color, which currently streams on Hulu.

“All of this represents a startling direction for a brand that was once synonymous with wholesome family entertainment. Disney assured parents in 2019 that they wouldn’t allow content higher than a PG-13 on its streaming platform. So this is a betrayal of trust for the parents who built their household media habits around Disney’s ‘family friendly only’ promise,” said Penny Nance, CEO and President, Concerned Women for America.

Last April, the company faced backlash from families who were caught off-guard when the series “Dying for Sex” was advertised on the Disney+ landing page:

Received from multiple sources. Disney is reportedly advertising a series called “Dying for Sex” on the front page of their streaming service. One source says their 6-year-old saw it and started asking about it. I thought this application was supposed to be ‘family friendly.’”

“We urge Disney to find other ways to protect children from R and MA-rated content. They could offer a less expensive family-friendly tier and put the adult content on a different tier so that it’s less likely that children will stumble across inappropriate content. Disney should also ensure that the most restrictive parental controls are on by default, and if left on while logged in under an adult profile, it should automatically revert to the most restricted profile. And if Disney can’t add common sense protections, we strongly urge families to find safer streaming alternatives,” Nance added.

In 2023 Disney assumed full ownership of Hulu when it bought out AT&T and Comcast’s remaining stakes. In 2025, Disney signaled plans to shut down the Hulu streaming service entirely and migrate its entire catalogue over to the Disney+ platform for a “one app experience.”

In December 2025, CWA research found that Netflix content creators knowingly pushed the envelope to expose children to adult themes; its programming rated appropriate for children revealed that 41% of G-rated series, and 41% of TV-Y7-rated series on Netflix contain LGBTQ+ content.
