Dear Friends,
We cannot keep the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) submerged, no matter how hard we try!Like a bad penny, it just keeps turning up.
LOST is another United Nations treaty that was negotiated in the 1970s.It was rejected by President Reagan and should clearly remain buried deep in our sea bed.
By ratifying LOST, the U.S. would give up its sovereignty in exchange for begging unelected international officials for permission to use its own resources. The treaty establishes a governing authority called the International Seabed Authority (the “Authority”) which has the power to tax countries for using their own property.
LOST threatens our national sovereignty by subjecting our military and U.S. businesses to mandatory international dispute resolution by others who may be motivated by anti-American agendas. The decisions made by the “Authority” would be final and devoid of any appeals process.
Further, this treaty requires U.S. companies to transfer strategic technologies to Third World countries, some of them declared or potential enemies of the U.S.Frankly, our technological superiority in business and military innovation would be utterly compromised. This provision would strip businesses of their natural and constitutionally protected right to private property. It could also require us to voluntarily hand over military secrets to countries which seek to harm us.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hold a hearing on Wednesday, May 23, on LOST.Sen. Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) warned us of the Left’s unfair maneuver, in which only proponents of the treaty are slated to testify.
Fortunately, Sen. DeMint is leading the charge to sink this treaty. He has circulated a letter to oppose LOST and already has 26 signers on the letter. We need at least eight more senators to join his efforts.
