Dear Friends,

We need your help today on several key items:

1. Funding the Government

President Barack Obama and Senator Harry Reid (D-Nevada) want to shut down the government over funding the military and abortions in Washington, D.C.

On Monday, House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Kentucky) introduced a one-week Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the government through April 15. This CR includes funding for the military through the remainder of Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, $12 billion in spending cuts, and reinstating the Dornan Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding of abortions in the nation’s capital for the remainder of FY 11.

At a time when the military is facing three wars, our servicemen and women should not be used as political pawns.

Furthermore, Democrats have historically agreed to the Dornan Amendment. In fact, this amendment has been included in numerous appropriations bills supported by congressional members on both sides of the abortion debate. President Obama even signed the policy into law for FY09 and voted to continue the policy twice while serving in the U.S. Senate.

This short-term CR is an incremental step in the process. Concerned Women for America (CWA) believes that our servicemen and women in harm’s way must be guaranteed their salaries. We also believe that Washington must cut wasteful spending and not force Americans to subsidize abortions in our nation’s capital. However, the time has come for Congress to defund Planned Parenthood as well as enact the other pro-life and pro-family policies in H.R. 1.

Please call your representative and senators and tell them to stop abortions in Washington, fund our troops, and defund Planned Parenthood! Please click here to find your representatives and senators.

2. Repealing “DADT”

On Thursday, April 7, the House Armed Services Committee will hold a hearing on the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) law.

Last Friday, the Personnel Subcommittee held a hearing where Dr. Clifford Stanley, Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel & Readiness, and Vice Admiral William Gortney, Director of the Joint Staff, testified about the “Repeal Implementation Plan.” At that hearing, there were statements made by Dr. Stanley and Vice Admiral Gortney that bear further scrutiny. One such statement made was that “gender identity” (whether someone is a male or female) is a public issue, but “sexual orientation” is private one.

The legislation that Congress rammed through during the lame duck session stipulated that the DADT repeal may occur 60 days after President Obama, the Secretary of Defense, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff “certify” that the repeal will be “consistent” with military recruiting, retention, and readiness. We have heard that it is the administration’s intent to “certify” their victory in June during “LGBT (lesbian, ‘gay,’ bisexual, transgender) Equality Month.” We need members of Congress to put the brakes on repealing DADT! This is a crucial time.

Please call your representative on the House Armed Services Committee and encourage him or her to attend the hearing at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 7. Please ask them not to allow the Obama administration to implement the “DADT” repeal without sufficient time for responsible oversight in the new 112th Congress.

3. Goodwin Liu’s nomination to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals

On April 7, the Senate Judiciary Committee will vote on Goodwin Liu’s nomination to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Throughout Mr. Liu’s short career, he has demonstrated beyond any reasonable doubt that he is unfit to serve as an objective officer of the court. Liu believes the Constitution is a living, breathing document that must change to accommodate new progressive ideas. He has said, “The Framers deliberately chose broad words so they would be adaptable over time.”

Liu argued that judges should read into the Constitution a constitutional right to welfare. In a 2008 Stanford Law Review article, Liu said that judges should “determine, at the moment of decision, whether our collective values on a given issue have converged to a degree that they can be persuasively crystallized and credibly absorbed into legal doctrine.”

He also believes there is a constitutional right to same-sex “marriage.”‘ In his left-wing radical activism, Liu offered a friend of the court brief to the California Supreme Court arguing the Court should invalidate the will and the vote of Californians to find the state’s definition of marriage as the union between one man and one woman unconstitutional.

Please call your senator on the Judiciary Committee today and urge him or her to oppose Goodwin Liu’s nomination.

4. No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act

Next week, Congress is scheduled consider the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” H.R. 3. This bill would prohibit public funding of abortion in all federal programs and would ensure that no federal funds would be used for elective abortions. It would also codify the Hyde and Helms amendments, which currently must be renewed every year, and would further protect the conscience clause for medical professionals and institutions found in the Hyde-Weldon amendment.

To date, there are 222 cosponsors of this legislation. If you would like to see if your representative is supporting this bill, please click here. If your representative is not a cosponsor, please call urge your representative to sign onto the bill before the April 7 deadline. If your representative is a cosponsor, please convey your thanks.

Please call your representative today and urge a “yes” vote for the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act when it comes up. Please click here for your representative’s contact information.

Blessings,
