Concerned Women for America of Maine joined in partnership with Maine Right to Life for the annual Hands Around the Capitol event Saturday, January 15, 2011, in Augusta, Maine
This year marked the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade
At this event we publicly recognize and mourn the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion on demand during all nine months of pregnancy. The solemn march provides an intense impact on those who witness it.
A Protestant service was held at Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, 393 Water St. in Augusta at 10:00 a.m. Penny Morrell, Concerned Women for America of Maine, Area Director, South, introduced the guest speaker, Carroll Conley. Carroll is the Executive Director of the Christian Civic League of Maine. A Catholic service was held simultaneously with Bishop Richard Malone officiating at St. Mary’s Church, 41 Western Avenue, Augusta. The Rally began at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Gym, 56 Sewall Street in Augusta. The March to the Capitol started at 12:30 p.m.
Following the prayer services and the rally, the participants marched to the Capitol building and joined hands encircling the entire building. The Capitol Bell rang 38 times, representing the number of years since Roe v. Wade was enacted and 38 long-stem red roses were laid on the ground by the Capitol Bell.
