WASHINGTON, DC – Concerned Women for America (CWA) commended 47 U.S. House Republicans for calling on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to ensure “greater parental transparency and accountability in children’s programming,” as the FCC reviews the TV Parental Guidelines.
“We believe that families should not be blindsided by ideological content hidden inside entertainment marketed to minors,” the House members wrote in a letter to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr.
A CWA analysis of Netflix programming rated appropriate for children revealed that 41% of G-rated series and 41% of TV-Y7-rated series contain LGBTQ+ content.
“Parents are highly concerned about content indoctrinating their children, and our recent polling shows a majority of parents say it is crucial for TV programs to disclose sensitive themes in children’s TV programming. We are grateful to those 47 House Republican members who have stood up for children and families,” said Penny Nance, CEO and President, Concerned Women for America.
A poll commissioned by CWA found that 87% of Americans said it was “very important or somewhat important” for children’s content to include content labels disclosing the presence of “sensitive themes,” including content related to gender and sexual orientation.
“We believe the FCC needs to ensure that the TV content ratings system is transparent and accurate so parents can make informed viewing decisions for their children. Right now, the TV ratings system does not alert parents to LGBTQ+ themes in their children’s TV shows. Parents should have that information, and it’s time to give them that choice,” Nance said.
CWA filed an FCC comment about why TV programs should alert parents to LGBTQ+ and other sensitive content in shows, especially those targeted to children. The comment was submitted in response to the FCC Media Bureau’s Public Notice seeking input on whether and how the TV Parental Guidelines age ratings system and the Television Oversight Monitoring Board can be improved to better empower parents in today’s viewing environment, including streaming and on-demand platforms.
