CWA of Georgia in partnership with American Principles Project hosted two outstanding Common Core events this past weekend. Several hundred people from across the metro Atlanta area and surrounding counties attended the Countering the Common Core events in Duluth and Marietta. Also attending were state legislators and various county school board members. The attendees heard expert panelists expose the threat of the Common Core to Georgia’s educational sovereignty.
Dr. Bill Evers of the Hoover Institute began the discussion by explaining the history of the education “reform” movement that led to Common Core, and what it means to adopt Common Core math and English language arts standards. Jamie Gass of the Pioneer Institute described what works in education reform. He explained the “Massachusetts Miracle,” and how different that is from the Common Core.
Next Emmett McGroarty of American Principles Project discussed the entities behind Common Core the players, the money, the agendas. He also talked about future governance of the standards (and how limited the states’ options are) and reported on the status of the nationwide movement to withdraw from Common Core. Jane Robbins, also of American Principles Project, discussed the connection of Common Core to intrusive data-collection on students.
State Senator William Ligon (R Brunswick) concluded the panel portion of the evening by discussing how Georgia became entangled with the Common Core and how the state legislature was bypassed in any legislative decisions on the Common Core. Sen. Ligon challenged the attendees to get involved in the fight to return educational sovereignty to Georgia parents.
CWA of Georgia state director, Tanya Ditty, moderated a time of Questions and Answers. The evening concluded with a call to action and an opportunity for attendees to become engaged in the efforts to withdraw Georgia from the Common Core.
